Chapter 3

The next Saturday morning, I logged onto my Facebook. I had one new message. From Austin. I quickly pressed the message and wait for it to appear on the screen. The words in the message were simple, but they broke my heart more than 100 words would.

I changed my mind.

That's it. I felt my heart shatter once again and fell down to the floor clutching my hurting chest. The pain wouldn't go away. It burned harder until I finally let my tears out. After crying for a few hours, I called Avery. She couldn't come over because she had guests over, but she told me she would come as soon as they left. So I fell asleep.

~

I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. I answered groggily.

"Hey," the voice on the other end said. "It's Josh." Suddenly, I wasn't tired anymore. I sat up and cleared my throat.

"Josh? Oh, um, hi. I wasn't expecting you to call me." He chuckled nervously.

"Yeah...So are you sure you don't want to date me?" He sounded so sad it almost broke my heart again.

"No, I'm not sure. Actually, I think I made a huge mistake. I really like you Josh."

"Really? Well, do you want to hang out later?" I looked at myself in the mirror. No way was in shape to go out anywhere especially with Josh.

"Maybe tomorrow Josh. I'll talk to you later."

"Oh, okay." He sounded honestly sad. "Bye. I love you." Then he hung up. He....he loved me? I only dated him for a week! Maybe Avery was right. Maybe I shouldn't go out with Josh. But I didn't listen to the little voice in my head. I was just so happy to have sorted this out. But then I remembered Rachel. And how she stabbed me in the back.

TWO WEEKS LATER

Me and Josh have been dating for about two weeks now. Avery has told me thousands of times that I should dump him because he's been lying to me, but I don't think that's true. Today's the school dance. The theme is really stupid too. Under water. Yay.

Avery isn't coming. She's been sick this whole week. It really sucks.

I walked into the change room to put on a tank top. I wasn't going to do anything extreme for this dance. Like I said, it's stupid.

As you guessed, Josh asked me to the dance. I just have a bad feeling about today. A really, really bad feeling.

As I walked into the gym, I realized how lame this dance really was. There were barely any decorations and no one wore anything 'under water' themed. Then again, I don't think anyone knew how.

They also played a lot of really old songs that no one's heard of. The few good songs they played, me and Josh danced. As we were dancing, I looked around.

There, sitting on a bench, was my 'friend' Isabelle. She has been obsessed with Josh since grade 5. GRADE 5. She was sitting, crying, with some other friends around, trying to comfort her. I knew why she was crying. It was because I was dancing with Josh. Everyone thought that she needed to get over him. They dated 3 times and each time, he broke her heart.

As I watched Isabelle, her eyes flew up to meet mine and they sent me a glare that sent shivers down my spine. I remembered what she said to me and Avery.

FLASHBACK

"You know what, Lily? Ever since you came here, you have been ruining my chances to be with Josh. You know why I wear make-up now? For Josh." She said to me in her high-pitched whiny voice. We were at a pool and was yelling at me for dating Josh.

"What about Rachel? You weren't mad at her?" She rolled her eyes and scoffed.

"Of course not. Rachel's my friend." She said in her I-know-everything voice. I was confused.

"I thought I was your friend too." When I said that, she burst out laughing, her screechy voice making me want to cover my ears and tell her to shut up.

"My friend? You are a lying backstabbing bitch who always gets what she wants and you're a hypocrite." She was still laughing but it held no humor.

"I get what I want all the time? What about you Isabelle? Miss-Ijust-got-10-sweaters-from-Joshua-Petertz-and-5-pairs-of-converse-and-a-touch-screen-laptop-and-3-pairs-of-Uggs-and-20-pairs-of-skinny-jeans?" She kept laughing. That was our whole conversation. She walked away with Mary, another girl with an obsession with Josh.

END OF FLASHBACK

Then I remembered the hallway incident. Avery was fighting with Isabelle about how Rachel was making a big deal out of nothing.

"Isabelle, I don't want to be a part of this just as much as you, but I'm going to stand up for my friends. And I was already a part of this from the beginning. You weren't. So don't be telling ME to bug out of this." Avery said to Isabelle, standing at least a head taller than her.

"If you don't want to be a part of it, then don't be and stop acting so bitchy." With that, she walked away. When Conner heard what Isabelle said, he wanted to murder her but Avery, being the calm person she was, told him it was no big deal.

END OF FLASHBACK

My head was swarming with information and Avery's words flashed through my head.

He's lying to you Lily. He's been lying this whole time.

Suddenly, I knew what to do.

"Josh," I said nervously to my date. He smiled, happy he was being acknowledged. "I think we should break up." I told him simply. The smile was wiped right off his face. He looked at loss for words.

"B-break up? But I love you!" I smiled sadly at him and dropped my arms from around his shoulders.

"Apparently not. I know about you and Rachel." His eyes were wide and his mouth was hanging open. I turned on my heel, and walked away. It was after school so I went home. I logged into my Messenger and told Avery the whole story.

Wait, let me get this straight. You broke up with him, because Isabelle was sad? Why the hell would you do that??!!

If you can't tell, Avery hated Isabelle. She thought she was stuck-up and didn't care about anyone but herself.

I don't know, I replied. I wanted to be a good friend. But I also broke up with him because he was seeing Rachel behind my back.

Okay, I can agree with that but why be a good friend to her when all she's done is talk about you behind your back? Honestly, I didn't know why. I just don't want to be as low as she was.

I logged onto my Facebook. I had a new message. From Austin. Oh, boy. This better be good.
