Chapter 1

"Haneul, come down here!" Haneul jumped up from her seat as she heard her mom call for her.

"Coming!"

Haneul raced down the stairs to meet her mom in the kitchen, "I'm here."

Her mom looked her up and down, "Sweetie you look like a mess. Here take your mail and go get cleaned up. Dinner will be ready in 30 mins."

Haneul sighed and reached for her mail looking at the clock just passed her mother in the meantime, "It's only 4, why are we eating so early?"

Haneul's mom smiled, "Your dad's coming back today."

Haneul jumped up and down, "Really?" Haneul hadn't seen her father in almost a year. Her mom pulled Haneul into a hug, "Yes, really," Haneul's mom pulled away and put her hand on top of Haneul's head, "Now go get ready."

Haneul ran up the stairs, throwing her mail on her desk and jumping to her closet, rummaging to find a better outfit in honor of her dad coming home.

After picking the perfect outfit, Haneul walked towards her desk, scrunching her eyes as her vision was caught on a weird envelope. Haneul picked up the envelope, admiring the twirls and lines lingering on the back before flipping it over. The front of the envelope was made out to Madam Haneul Lee. Weird, Haneul thought, she had rarely received mail, and when she did it was never made out to 'Madam'.

Looking at the top of the envelope, she saw the return address was for Diamond Crest Academy. Haneul had never heard of such a school. Haneul scoffed, realizing it was mostly like spam mail and threw it into her trash bin next to her desk.

"Haneul, your dad's almost here. Hurry up and help me with dinner."

Haneul looked once more at the envelope before making her way down the stairs. As soon as she reached the bottom, she saw the door knob start to turn and her dad walked in.

"Dad!" Haneul rushed towards her dad, jumping to give him a hug.

"Sweetie, I missed you," her dad put his arms around her.

Haneul's dad worked for the government, and was always constantly on assignments at stations he was not able to disclose, even to his family. She rarely had the opportunity to see him as he was only able to visit for short durations.

Haneul pulled away from her father, "How long are you staying?"

Her fathers smile fell just a bit, "only for the weekend"

Haneul sighed but was not shocked, "it's okay. I understand."

Haneul's father smiled at her, "Hopefully soon we won't have to go such long durations without seeing each other"

Haneul smiled back, only this time it was a fake smile. Her father had told her this exact sentence every time he came to visit, only it was never true.

"Come on let's go eat dinner," her father gently put his arm on her back and led her into the kitchen. Haneul's mom smiled at the picture before giving her husband a kiss.

Afterwards the small family gathered around the table, eating their dinner, making small talk.

Haneul's father looked over to her, "Sweetie, has anything new been happening in your life?"

Haneul thought for a moment, "No, not really," Haneul paused for a moment, "I did receive a weird envelope in the mail today from a school called Diamond Crest Academy, have you heard of it?"

Haneul's father's eyes widened as he choked on his water. Haneul's mother patted his back, concern in her eyes, "honey are you okay?"

Haneul's father rubbed his hands on his pants and caught his breath, "Yes, sorry for the scare. The water just went down the wrong pipe," Haneul's father turned his attention back to his daughter, "No, actually, I don't believe I have heard of it. Are you sure it is a real school?"
