Glinda woke up in the next morning, as she always did, forgetting for a while what bothered her yesterday. This let her wake up properly. But in the moment she walked out of her and Boq's room and saw Elphaba's door open, the memories washed her like an un-dammed river.
She walked all the way to the dining hall, and there Elphaba sat, in her villager costume and skin, drinking some coffee. She also noticed some cooks and maids eyeing her.
"I'm so glad I find you here." Glinda said.
"Me as well. This hall is so marvelous." Elphaba returned.
"I'm fond of it too."
Then Glinda turned to the maids: "Excuse me, would you mind us for just a couple of minutes?"
They complied, eyeing Elphaba also on their way out, but differently then they did Glinda. Something fishy was going on.
"I do believe we said some things yesterday that we might've regreted." Glinda sighed.
"I think so too. I shouldn't have been so quick to play my 'political game'."
Glinda became somber.
"You heard our conversation?"
"And I don't plan to make the same mistakes again. I thought that Shenshen's ideals died a long time ago, but if they're still in place I have to think of another plan."
"But you said we already had a plan! What, so now you make another one?"
"I just need to find another way towards the same outcome. Do you have any ideas?"
"Don't look at me, I'm just a puppet now, aren't I?"
Elphaba changed her tone.
"Of course you're not. At least, I don't want you to be. We have to work together. If I'm a bit harsh and mean it's because I really believe in what I'm working for."
"But can't you see that if you win I lose? If I help you and you win I'm losing my reputation and I'm dragged through the mud. I'd be ridiculed forever!"
"Don't tell me that's more important to you then the Animals' rights?" Elphaba asked, suspicious.
"I'm saying that it's one way or the other. No in-between." Glinda said defenitively, not expecting Elphaba to say what she was about to say.
"So I guess I'm on my own."
Glinda's jaw fell to the ground.
"You don't really mean it, do you?"
"No. I'm dead serious."
"You sure will be dead if you go on your own from now. Who would protect you?"
"I will."
In this instance the maids decided to listen to the conversation. They could kind of hear it because Elphaba and Glinda were so brought up the talk they raised their voice a little.
"Don't make me laugh!" Glinda said, "Last time you tried to protect yourself a little farm girl almost wiped you out of existance!"
"I was stupid then.
