SECOND CHOICE

    koshi saw you enter the gym, big brown eyes trained on you as you walked over to sit down. you looked unbothered, unaffected at his failure to attend homeroom. unaffected of him now avoiding you. it made his heart clench, yet he huffed and turned to daichi, resuming his conversation. his full attention wasn't on his friend at the moment, he was trying to observe you in the corner of his eye.

    ❝where were you this morning, sugawara? you didn't ride with y/n?❞

    his eyes widened at the question, putting on a bashful look for the sake of it, ❝oh, uh, no. i didn't feel the best this morning, so i came in late. sorry for concerning you, daichi!❞

    his friend gave him a suspicious look, ❝did something happen?❞

    the setter turned to look at you, only to find you talking with a lowerclassmen - tsukishima. it made him want to run to you and take you out of the gym, to take you into your car and just tell you how much it hurt. instead, he huffed out a breath, turning back to his captain. ❝yeah, i guess something did.❞

    daichi raised his eyebrows in shock. as long as they've been friends, they've never been divided, so to hear this - it bewildered him. ❝well,❞ he laid a heavy hand on koshi's shoulder, ❝i'm always here if you need to talk it out.❞

    the grey-haired teen gave a soft smile at his attempt at comfort.

    ❝but i guess that's why she seemed off this morning.❞

    ❝off? What do you mean 'off?'❞

    daichi shrugged, letting his hand fall to his side, ❝i don't know. more irritated? it seemed like her mind wasn't all there, if you know what i mean.❞

    a part of koshi felt happy at this news. his absence was affecting you, just as he thought it would. yet, the other part of him - the part that was against all of this - was scowling. he didn't want to worsen your mood, and he wanted nothing more than to hold you again.

    but he has to let you know that he will never be a second choice.
