After her birthday mission was over, I was relieved. We still kept in touch as usual from the chat. We talked about many things and as each days passed, I felt closer to her. I knew many things about her that she had never revealed in her social media or even some of her friends. She was more open to me now and I also did the same. I still had one foot on the boundary though, as I was afraid that our status as lecturer and student would over complicated things for us.
Days went on and it was finally close to my birthday this time. I wondered if she remembered my birthday but it was quite impossible for me to ask and talk about it with her directly. That would be very embarrassing. As the day was getting closer, my conscience spoke to me again.
"Expecting something, brother? A giant cake? A car? Or perhaps, a confession? Lol, keep on dreaming, my stupid one. I bet 100 bucks that she will forget it or at least it will not be like what you are expecting. Better quit now~"
I couldn't accept what it was trying to tell me. I believed in her and I knew things would turn out as I wanted it to be. That was the only drive that kept pushing me forward.
My birthday arrived and it was 1.17 AM in the middle of the night when my chat notification suddenly rang.
"Happy birthday sirrrr. You have the same birthday as my favorite anime character by the way" she texted me.
At that moment, I knew this was embarrassing, but I almost cried. Yeah, I confess, tears flowed down my eyes as I read her text. I won the bet with my conscience but too bad, it couldn't pay me my 100 bucks. We continued chatting for a while and went to sleep to continue the next day.
Morning came and it was the morning of my birthday. I had just the best sleep last night because of her birthday greetings. Simple but powerful stuff to start my day. I went on with my routine for the day with smile and when it was evening, a delivery man pushed the bell of my house. I went to take a look.
"Delivery for Mr...Felix. From miss Emily, sir." the delivery guy said as he handed me a box of cake.
You couldn't imagine how excited I was during that moment. That was the best moment that I ever had since I graduated from my master degree. But there was something strange inside the box. I saw the receipt was left inside and I could see the price written over there.
"Pfffttt, ROFL... My gosh, what a joke. She gave you this without taking out the price tag. HAHAHAHAHA... See the sign here? It's out of desperation boy! She didn't plan anything for you and she just randomly ordered a cake. God, that's a homerun in my guts!" my conscience started blabbering again.
"No, I don't care. A gift is a gift. Any tiny effort she made meant a world to me and I will accept this happily. Shut the fuck up, damn conscience." I told my conscience.
I cut the cake and started enjoying it. It tasted better than any cake the world could give me. Nothing could beat the taste of the cake given by her. I was ecstatic that night and it was the best birthday I've ever had in my whole life. I couldn't ask for anything better than this.
"Hey, got your cake here. Tasted real good. Thanks for everything, Emily" I texted her to show her my gratitude.
"Thank God you like it, sir. Sorry if it's kinda late at night but I just got home from work so yeah, I hope you enjoy it, sir. Happy birthday again"
"No, don't mind that. It's ok, I loved it. Thanks a bunch" I replied while sending her the similar stickers that she usually sent me if she expressed her thanks.
