I arrived at the station much later than intended, despite the fact I was expected at 10:00 PM sharp. It’s a quarter to 11 now, and oddly enough for the city the streets were already silent. I tried to tell myself it was likely nothing, but I still couldn’t feel as though something were behind me. Watching. Waiting. As soon as the thought fully took hold, I spun around and grasped at the magnum at my hip, though nothing was there. At least, not out in the open.... I quickly unlocked the gate and sealed it behind me, nearly breaking into a jog as I approached the police station entrance. Only when I was finally inside did the silence really hit me. Turning slowly, I was greeted to an empty - though fully lit - station. “What the hell?” I muttered, wandering around the lobby. “Shhhhh, shhh, stop it!” As soon as I heard the whispering and hushed laughter, I went over to the desk and looked behind it. A few of the other officers were playing a prank on me, of-fucking-course. "Oh! Hey, rook." I narrowed my eyes at them as they came out of hiding. "So who'd you put outside." I inquire, more of a demand than a question. "Nobody's outside." The others kept laughing. "Might've been a giant robot!" I rolled my eyes, hearing more officers coming out of hiding. "We were gonna reenact Resident Evil, but SOMEONE decided not to get the costume paint." The officer who was being referred to started sputtering out something in her own defense. "Anyway, welcome to the force rook. Don't worry, nobody bites!" They lead me to the conference room, where pizza and snacks were waiting. I had just started to relax when someone catches my eye, trying to sneak around the back of the crowd. "What the..?" I stood and started to approach the individual. After a few moments I recognize him, it's one of the deputies. However, he was acting weird, kind of like a cat sneaking around the corners in an unfamiliar home. "Deputy!" I wave to him, getting his attention immediately. He stopped, looking me directly in the eyes. Something about his gaze seriously unnerved me, though I tried to ignore the feeling and pass it off as my nerves still pressuring me from earlier. He smiles and steps forward, almost bearing down on me. "Haven't seen you around before." I pause before replying. "Sir, we... Met last week." He chuckles a bit. "Oh, sorry about that. I can be forgetful." Something is seriously wrong..... "What? Why so paranoid? Come on, we're all officers here. There's no need to nervous." Others come over, and none of them seem at all unnerved by him. Of course it's just my paranoia. "Hey, Smith! Nice tattoo!" He jumped slightly, but smiled at the officer who complimented him. Only then do I notice the symbol on his left arm. "Oh, thanks. Can't remember where I saw this design, but I liked it." He eyed me again, still smiling. "Like it, sweetie?" I scoffed, crossing my arms over my chest. "I'm not your 'sweetie', my name is Luna." He started chuckling again. "Well aren't you a fighter!" Wrapping an arm around me, Deputy Smith turned to the others with a big grin on his face. "Let's all have a word for Luna here. The feistiest officer in this city!" I couldn't help but notice how..... incredibly strong he was. He had a grip of steel. "Alright, you maggots. Time to get on with the night." A tall man said as he entered the room. "Can all my new recruits step forward, please?" I stepped forward with the others. "Welcome, you unfortunate bastards. So, before I get on with the vows, I must warn you. This is a dangerous city and we have some dangerous criminals in lock-up here at the station. If you're squeamish, or a bleeding heart, it's time to go home. So, shall we proceed?" I saluted with the others. "Alright! Now. Repeat everything I say." He proceeded to go on with the vows, and I happily agreed to them, though I could feel an even stronger gaze at the back of my head. I just tried to keep smiling so nobody else could see how uncomfortable I was. "I hereby swear to serve and protect, and to stand by my fellow officers at all costs." I felt a hand on my shoulder, spinning me around to face, again, Deputy Smith. "Careful there, Luna. I might just hold you to that." He said with a devious smirk. "Well, what are we waiting for! Let's party." I chuckled nervously, though letting him lead me back into the crowd. I felt I had gotten to know Smith after a few minutes, until he walked away to "take care of something". Thinking nothing of it, I went to force myself to socialize with some of the other officers. Good men, just a bunch of goofballs. Hopefully working having to be social won't be such a bad thing..... Eventually a siren went off. "Whoa- what the hell?!" One of the the other recruits shouted as the others started to panic. "Those damned assholes got out!" ....SHIT! I rushed to where the lock-up was, only to be met with empty cells. Oh... Shit..... "Luna! There you are!" Smith shouted, running over. "What happened?!" I asked, but he only shook his head in confusion. "I-I don't know! Come on, we have to warn the others." I nodded, though before I could run back I was thrown to the ground. "Not another step, beautiful." Shit.... Holy fucking shit! "Luna!" As I tried to reach the magnum that had been thrown aside, I saw Smith trying to restrain the man. I finally reached it just as he had grabbed a shard of broken glass, holding it up to Smith's throat. "Luna, take the shot!" I didn't want to kill anyone, but I didn't want anyone to get hurt because of him either. As time slowed to a halt, my finger wrapped around the trigger, shot itself being completely deafening. As if time could slow any further, Smith got back to his feet, smirking darkly at me. "Oh, Luna. You're so predictable, just like the rest of humanity....." His voice was much different now, being gravelly and almost mechanical. He took the glass shard, approaching me. "Smith, what the hell....!" He walked closer, grabbing my wrist. "You inspire me. Poor thing...." I gasped in pain and horror as the shard plunged into my abdomen. I fell to my knees, trying desperately to rip it out of me. "Sorry, Luna. It's nothing personal." He walked away, only to disappear into thin air as he got to the door. God... Help me.....
I woke up broken and in severe pain on the floor, the dawn just becoming visible going by the light coming through the windows. I knew I had to get back to my feet, but I barely had any strength whatsoever. Somehow, I got to my feet, shambling out into the hall. What I was greeted to was a massive trail of blood. Whoa... What the hell....? I kept wandering around, only to find the bodies of everyone I had met just hours earlier. "No....No...." I muttered, tearing up as I kept shambling. Just as I got to the lobby, the doors were kicked down by government agents. "We have a survivor!" They ran over to me, and I tried to speak. No sound came from my vocal cords, and I collapsed again. "Get her onto the chopper. There has to be others, keep searching!" I was loaded up onto a helicopter, the hours passing by quickly afterwards as I felt as numb as I possibly could be. They brought me to some sort of facility, kept asking me questions I didn't have the strength to answer. I'm not sure how long I was there before two people in particular came to talk to me- a man and a giant robot. "He wasn't kidding...." I mutter to myself as they came closer, kneeling by the bedside. "Officer, welcome to Sector Seven. We'll need to ask you a few questions, and if you're interested in a fresh start, we might just be able to give you a new purpose in life."
