Because this song just gives me "Can I marry your daughter?" vibes x

His hands sweated against the steering wheel as he drove down the crooked roads. He hadn't been this nervous on these roads since the first time he drove them, going to meet her parents, only difference is, she was there telling him to relax, she wasn't there this time.

He had wrote it all out and knew what he'd say, but after reading over it about twenty times, he rolled the paper up in a ball and threw it in the bin. 'Too fucking cringy', he had mumbled, pacing around the hotel room he was staying in.

He had hardly slept a wink, overthinking everything about today. What would he say? He had no idea. He decided to wing it for now. What would he wear? At the start he thought he'd dress casually, but then he thought no, he needs to look smart and make an effort, but when he started looking through his suits before he left London, he thought, 'no, too preppy'. So, in his suitcase he packed three pairs of jeans, two tshirts and three shirts to choose from. All morning he stood in a pair of jeans trying to pick between two shirts that were almost the exact same shade of blue. He decided to go with the darker one, 'more oceany like y/ns eyes'.

Now, in the car, he sat in a pink shirt, a last minute change before he ran down to get some breakfast in the hotel. All he managed to eat was one slice of toast.

Jesus he was nervous. He could see the house in the distance now and his hands started to shake.

He had nothing to be scared of, except the possibility they'd say no. But why would they say no? They loved him. He always watched football with her dad. Not once did they ever fall out... well not about anything serious, just about which was better, Derby or Liverpool? And her mum, well, she melted his heart. One of the sweetest woman he had ever met.

Pulling up in the yard, the familiar, friendly sound of Paddys barking filled the air, making him less nervous. "Hey bud", he said, closing the car door behind him and leaning down to pet the old lab, "How the hell do I do this Paddy?", he asked under his breath. Paddy was almost completely blind by now, but after hearing his voice and sniffing him for a few seconds, he was happy to let Niall in.

The sound of the door opening and her mothers voice snapped his attention away from the dog, making him stand up, Paddy standing by his side, "Niall love what are you doing here?", she walked accross the yard with both arms held out to hug him.

"Anne, how are ya?", he held her in a warm hug, almost scared to let go.

"I'm good dear come on in", she held onto his arm, shooing the dog away with the tea towel she held in her other hand. "Where's y/n?".

"She's in London", he answered simply, "busy working".

"And you came alone? To visit?", she was confused as to why her daughters boyfriend of five years was here without her daughter, but she was relieved she was well and working.

Niall wandered on what to say as he walked in the house, closing the door behind him. "I uh.."

"Niall!", her fathers voice came from the living room, startling him at first, but he relaxed when he saw the smile on his face as he walked towards him. "How are ya son?", he asked shaking his hand.

"Good- I'm good". He worried her dad would feel the sweat on his palms. "I'm just here to talk to you about something"

"Oh ok", his father nodded before holding his arm out towards the living room, "come in here, we'll have a chat. Is everything ok with y/n?".

"Yeah she's great, she's really great", he smiled as he sat down on the couch, at an angle from where her father sat in his chair.

They made small talk and watched the match as they waited for her mother to come in. She had went to make tea.

As they were both cheering at a goal that had been scored by her fathers favourite team, her mum walked in with a tray. He thanked her as she handed him a cup of tea.

"So", her father turned down the tv, "what was it you wanted to talk about Niall?". Both parents had their attention fully on him now. This was it.

"I um... I want to talk about y/n. She um....I love her.... more than anything", he was a stuttering mess, "she means the world to me". He paused looking down, his hands linked together, taking a deep breath. "I'd like your permission to ask her to marry me".

Her mother looked at her father but before they could speak, he started again. "I promise you I'll take care of her. I promise that nothing will come before her, that- that I'll do everything I can do to make her happy", he stood up, walking over to stand infront of the fireplace, "she is- she is everything to me and I promise to", he paused again breathing, embarrassed over his ramble, "I promise to love her", his voice was shaky but stern. It was clear he meant what he was staying.

"Well Niall", his father started, "sounds like you've just written you're vows". Niall stood unsure, but her father just laughed, standing up. "Of course you can marry our y/n. Only took you what, five years?", he joked, shaking Nialls hand, his other hand placed firmly on Nialls shoulder.

Niall tried to smile through the heavy breathing as he nodded along with her father. The man was now God to him, granting him everything he ever wanted. Niall looked past her father to her mother sitting on the couch. "Anne?".

She looked up at him, tears gracing her eyes. She stayed silent as she walked across the room, y/n's father stepping out of her way. She held Nialls face in her hands, looking over his face. "The first time she rang me to tell me she met you... she was so happy... I just knew the way she talked about you... I knew you were the one Niall". Niall smiled at her. "I've never seen her as happy as she has been since she met you".

"Thank you"

"Have you got a ring?"

"No. I've been looking but I just... I want it to be the right one. I don't think she'd want a huge big flashy one, that's not y/n."

"Simple elegance", her mother said.

"Yeah, like her"
