a few days in Ollie's eyes

———

It was a normal day of sailing to Ollie. Everything going quite average. The sun's up, wind's breezy, sky's clear. A normal morning.

Ollie goes up deck to meet the warm sun. He heads to the rails and puts his hands in it. He breathes the fresh salty air.

He's gotten used to the sea after being on it for a few weeks. He'd still like to come home, like the crew promised, though he would mind if he stayed a little long.

Then he notices that the rail has a substance on it. Ollie lifts up his hands to find black ink on his hands.

He looks at it and goes to wash his hands in the ocean. 'Pretzel must have gotten scared, either that it was Gillion-" Ollie thinks at he finish cleaning his hands, black ink mixing with the sea water.

Ollie heads to the kitchen to make some breakfast for himself. He notices that no one was above deck yet. 'Maybe they're really tired.' He thinks.

Then Ollie conjures an idea. He'll make breakfast for everyone! Yeah, that's a good idea.

He carefully pours the last of the orange juice into the fourth glass. "And...there!" He says to no one but himself.

Ollie looks at the four plates, all with toast, eggs, and orange juice. He grins, proud of himself.

He heads below deck to check up on the crew. He goes to knock on the trios room, then the room opens before he knocks.

"Gah! Holy shit, it's just you Ollie. You scared the literal crap out of me." Jay says catching her breath. Ollie glances at his friend. Her eyes baggy and slightly red, from crying, Ollie guessed. Ollie knows Jay has nightmares, sometimes he could hear her at night, then it slowly fades.

Ollie doesn't mention her current condition. "Sorry Jay, I'd just like to tell you that I made breakfast." Ollie smiles sincerely. "Do you mind telling Chip and Gill that breakfast is in the kitchen?" Ollie asks.

"Yeah, I'll tell them, but Gill's gone." Her voice getting quieter, from lack of sleep.

"What do you mean?" Ollie questions.

Jay closes her eyes for a moment, thinking or sleeping, Ollie can't tell.

"He left a note, saying he's going on a little quest, or journey, or whatever Gillion does." She rambles, raising her hand up for a gesture.

Ollie looks at her hand raised up.

It's covered in black ink.

"Why is your hand inky?" Ollie asks bluntly.

Jay sighs. "Fucking bastard spilled writing ink on me. We were reading Gill's note then Chip got too close and knocked the ink." She says rather irritated.

"I can get you a cloth if you'd like." Ollie suggests.

"That's sweet, but no thanks kid, you've done enough." Jay ruffles Ollie's hair with her other hand, not as covered in ink, but enough to be noticeable. She then turns around and shuts the door quietly, not wanting to shut the door hard in his face.

Ollie stands there for a bit, then goes off to wake up Old Man Earl.

——

"Mhmm, Ollie you are one good cook. It may just be eggs and toast, but it's the best one I've ever had." Chip says as finishes his meal, downing his orange juice.

"Really?" Ollie asks with his eyes gleaming.

"Yeah Chip's right, these are really good." Jay adds, making the boy's eyes glimmer.
