"We're going to the 15th floor," Yubin declared. The elevator door opened, and they stepped into its stainless steel-walled interior. Yubin had them follow her home after touring one of Seoul's largest shopping centres. Jin heaved a sigh, knowing that the female would only throw a bunch of questions to the young woman beside him.
Oddly enough, Byulyi noticed Yubin pressing a button that displayed the number '15' before the elevator began its ascent. She frowned, feeling a bit weird and a little heavier than usual as it accelerated upward. She had the impression of having been thrown on a giant jewelry box, and she did not quite like it.
It was even more bizarre than those moving stairs they had encountered earlier at the mall. She wondered what went through the minds of humans when they decided to invent such strange things. She didn't even know how they could move these things around, though she could easily tell they were geniuses. There's nothing of this sort from the world she was from.
And there was the floor indicator hovering above the door that caught her attention. When the elevator stops, the door opened and two more people went inside. They pressed the a combination of 1 and 2 before the plain, silver box started to move again. The indicator and the buttons show the same unit yet unfamiliar to her. They could be letters that this world use, but after remembering Yubin saying they were to go to the 15th floor, she figured out they might be numbers. She nodded once, thinking the first button might be one, followed by two. Judging by its order, that makes the button Yubin pressed, which was a combination of one and five, fifteen.
She was like a child learning how to count. People in her world called her smart, in this lifetime however, she felt she's nothing but an idiot.
"Twelve," she muttered, almost inaudible. The others then walked out of the elevator, leaving the three of them inside. Jin took notice of how she quietly observes her surroundings, mainly the red LED above the door.
By the time the silver melsh doors part once again, the LED shows the same number his sister pressed a few moments ago. With his right hand occupied with shopping bags, he took her hand with the left one, having her follow them to Yubin's flat. But soon, he made her stop just before she could walk inside. "Don't say anything weird."
Byulyi mustered a cold stare. "If one of us has to say anything odd, that would be you." When she continued to stare at him blankly, he shook his head in disbelief. "Girlfriend? What does that mean?"
"It's just..." His tongue darted out to wet his lips nervously. "It's... It means you're, ah... an old friend! Right! Old friend!" He stuttered, avoiding her eyes yet occasionally glancing at her to make sure she was convinced. "We... If you've been friends with a woman for a long time, you can call them girlfriend! It's just a combination of the words girl and friend, which makes it girlfriend. A female friend you've known for a long time."
"Who decided that?" Byulyi's head tilted as she took note of his burning red ears. "Is that a lie?"
"NO!"
