"The blockade's over, your majesty." Anakin Skywalker announced, entering the throne room with two tired clones. I sighed in relief and sank back into my chair, releasing the tension I had been holding in for hours. "The Separatists have left through hyperspace after an exhausting battle."
"The people of Suraniat will be forever grateful." My father thanked the Jedi, while a basket of goods from our planet was delivered to them as a present. "We have been considering a vote to become once and for all a Republic planet. We will not let our planet be threatened by Separatists." I couldn't help but smile at those words.
"We would be incredibly glad to have you as a Republic planet." Skywalker smiled. "Now, if you'll excuse us, there are some matters that we must attend to."
"Of course." The king smiled. Anakin bowed and then nodded in direction to Obi Wan, who nodded back as the younger Jedi left the room followed by the clones. I stood up from my seat to leave after the him. "Y/N." My father called from behind before I could leave. "There will be a special event tonight in which we will celebrate the Republic's victory. You must attend. Obi Wan will be by your side at all times disguised as your companion."
"Will the entire kingdom be there?" I asked, crossing my arms while approaching the throne he was sitting in.
"Not at the banquet." He replied. Before I could protest he continued. "However, the party will be taken outside, to the gardens, where we will be joined by the kingdom."
"This is very unlike you father." I said. My father was never the kind to organise such big events. He usually kept it to his close circle of nobles.
"Well, seeing how recent events have threatened my kingdom, I have decided it's time for a vote to become a Republic planet, or perhaps remain neutral. Tredar will be back from his appointment with the Banking Clan so it is to be arranged it as soon as possible. I will be announcing it tonight to our people." I never liked Tredar, his advisor. He always seemed to lead him the wrong way; While my father had never picked a side in war, he always seemed intrigued by Separatists. That was of course, before the blockade. I was extremely glad that my father was starting to lean towards the Republic. "You may go now."
"Father." I called for his attention. "I'm very happy about this decision of yours." I said hesitantly, genuinely smiling for the first time in a while.
"I know you are." He half smiled. "Now rest. You must be ready for the event tonight."
"Yes, father." I left the room with a feeling of extreme happiness. I felt relaxed for the first time since my aunt disappeared, so I decided to get ready early and put some extra effort in my appearance. I had showered and taken care of my hair and makeup when I realised it was too early; The event wouldn't start until an hour of so had passed, so I wanted to rest for a while. I inevitably fell asleep after having stayed up all night worrying about the battle, and didn't wake up until one of the handmaidens knocked on my door aggressively, announcing that the event was about to start.
"I'll be right there." I shouted while running to my mirror to make sure my makeup had stayed intact, curling with my fingers the strands of hair that framed my face. I then ran to get one of the dresses I had laid out on one of the armchairs:
I limped my way to the door as I tried to push the last metallic sandal on. They were my favourite shoe ever; Elegant while disguising a beautiful dagger I had been advised to carry by the guards. I could hear the crowd downstairs as I rushed through the corridor trying not to trip on my gown and keeping my crooked tiara in place, when I bumped into someone. I lost my balance, stepping backwards to avoid falling. To my surprise, I hadn't gathered the back of my dress, on which I stepped. Closing my eyes, I accepted what seemed like an inevitable fall.
Suddenly, I felt a strong grip on my wrist. I opened my eyes as Obi Wan pulled me back on my feet.
"Obi Wan! What are you doing here?" I tried to play it cool, regaining my position.
"On my way to the event. My room is right next to yours." He chuckled. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, of course." I nervously replied, while fixing my dress. I hadn't realise that with all my moving around, my crooked tiara had slipped off my head and was about to hit the ground. Obi Wan was fast enough to catch it mid air impressively. Placing it elegantly back in my hands, he raised his eyebrows. I shook my head, giggling as I put it back on my head. "You've got some reflexes." I looked up to his eyes for the first time and realised how handsome he looked in his new elegant robes.
"I'm a Jedi." He grinned. Shall we?" He let out his arm for me to grab and for a minute I was confused, but his amused face made me remember he was supposed to be my companion for the night. At that moment I understood his change of attire and gently grabbed his arm as we entered the main dining hall of the palace. Nobles from all over the kingdom where chattering indistinctly around the large banqueting table which was saturated from all the different types of luxurious cutlery and tableware that covered the surface. My father looked relieved I was fashionably late and not just late like usually, and my mother and brother were enjoying some drinks with some of the attendees by the opened balcony, letting the golden sunset in, which painted the room a warmer colour, making the crystals that hung from the chandelier above glisten.
Minutes passed before nobles started crowding around me, asking me questions about my personal life. I started getting nervous and stuttered; Although I was never scared to speak my mind, social situations and small talk were never my thing, I preferred to keep to myself.
Obi Wan was serving himself some drinks, when he turned to find me struggling to make conversation. He slowly walked towards me, looking me up and down. He greeted the guests and placed a drink on my hand, smiling confidently and making the nobles' attention shift towards him.
"Are you the mysterious prince everyone's been whispering about?" One of the women said. I breathed out.
"I guess so." Obi Wan said.
"We're so glad to find that princess Y/N finally has a suitor. It's been way too long since the last one." Another woman laughed and the rest followed.
"How so?" Obi Wan asked, noticing the expression of annoyance on my face.
"She really is hard to charm." The woman giggled.
"Well, if the suitor is the right one, It wouldn't be so hard, would it?" I replied harshly.
Obi Wan turned to face me, placing his free hand in his pocket. "And either way, why does it matter? Maybe the princess doesn't like wasting her time." He followed along. The nobles were awestruck. I nodded in approval and couldn't help but blush; Obi Wan had only been here for a day and a half and I already felt he was starting to understand me, even if it was all just an act to keep suspicion away.
