CHAPTER ELEVEN: ABIGAIL FAY

"What do you mean you met Esme?" Elena asked, getting up so suddenly that she pushed the chair so far away from herself. "You are not supposed to."

"I didn't meet her on purpose. She was on the lane and I asked her what she was doing here and she said that she came here to meet me." Edward said.

"And?" Ethan asked. He looked worried, as if he knew something I didn't. I thought about how this might feel for him. From what I had heard, Ethan cared about Esme; you could see that in his eyes. Edward looked down at the table and wrinkled his eyebrows, the way he did when he was thinking.

"I....I don't remember." He concluded.

"Is it possible to visit Esme?" Ethan asked.

"Yes, she is close by. Hardly an hour drive from here." Elena said. "I will inform her we are coming."

"NO." Ethan shouted. I looked at him questioningly. Why is he behaving weirdly? And I knew this was more than post breakup awkwardness. "Ethan, is everything alright?"

He fixed his eyes at me and I saw the determination in it and realized that he will tell me but not right now. It still shocked me how much we clicked, how easily I figured him out and maybe it was because, like Ethan said, I was good at detecting things. Funny that it took me a year to figure out my own husband.

"We will leave then."

"No, Edward can't come." Elena said.

"Why not?" I asked.

"He is tired Abigail." Ethan explained. "In his state, he cannot travel because the more weary he is, the more chances that he will have a tendency to turn."

"And why is that?" I asked.

"Aside from supernatural strength, sister?" Elena asked. I groaned silently at her calling me sister. Till now I only had Ed as my relative, my family was out of question. But now I had a whole family of in laws with a crazy curse being passed down between them.

"But we can't leave him alone." I said. He could attack someone, I thought but didn't say out loud.

"You both go, I will stay with him." Elena said.

"Why you?" Ethan asked. I saw the suspicion that danced in his eyes, tasted the bitterness in his voice.

"I was nineteen when I saw with my own eyes what my mother did to my father, so if you think you are any better to deal with this mess, feel free to volunteer." She said, her voice spiteful. Ethan was about to backfire something when Ed interfered. "She is right Ethan. She knows more about this than anyone. You guys need to leave." He fixed his eyes at mine and I realized that he didn't want me to leave to find answers, he wanted me to leave to keep me safe. My heart squeezed.

"Okay." I said. "But I need to talk to Ed, alone."

Ethan looked at me and I could see that he was afraid to leave me with a might-turn-into wendigo but I wasn't afraid. I nodded my head at him and he and Elena left, leaving the whole restaurant to us.

"I am sorry that I didn't tell you anything." He said. I tried not to think about all the lies he told me over these years about his origin and all the truth he didn't say.

"It doesn't matter now." I said. I couldn't meet his eyes because each time I looked into them I saw the darkness that engulfed the man I loved, so much so that he tried to kill me. "Ed, you will get through this. I promise you."
