CHAPTER SIXTEEN: ABIGAIL FAY

"You have a kid?" I asked. It seemed like a stupid question to ask but still I did. Ethan just kept staring at the kid, his eyes losing all the shine it usually had.

"Apparently, yes." Esme said. "This is my daughter, Rayn."

"Your daughter?" Ethan asked. "You have a daughter? But...I didn't know you were married."

"It's not essential for someone to be married to have a kid." Esme said spitefully. "And to answer your question if you still haven't found the answer, yes, I do have a daughter."

The girl just sat there in her mother's arms, her small grey eyes looking curiously at the three of us. She lifted a hand to move a strand of hair behind her ears allowing her to see more properly. She had Esme's eyes, the stormy grey-black ones; the dominant trait of the Harbour family. But she didn't have the blond hair, which was surprising since that too was a dominant trait. Her hair was her father's then.

'Messy brown hair.' I thought.

"Rayn." The girl turned her head towards me. "How old are you?"

She looked at her mother again, then back at me and said, "Five."

"Five." I whispered. Five years ago Esme was in college, five years ago Ethan was with her, Five years ago they were in a relationship.

"Five years?" Ethan whispered. "But that was...we were..." he closed his eyes, took a deep breath and opened it again. "Esme, you cheated on me?"

"What?" Esme and I both asked. Ethan looked at me more curiously than at Esme but then he kept talking. "Five years ago, we were still together. To be exact, five years ago, you started acting all weird and then we broke up." he sighed. "Honestly, I don't know why it surprises me so much."

So educated and yet so stupid, I thought.

"If I wasn't carrying my child right now I would have literally unleashed hell on you." Esme said, her voice filled with boiling anger but also, somewhere within it, a twinge of sadness.

"Seems like you already have." He said. Esme looked at him for a while but then without another word walked over to a car parked at the front of the library. She placed her kid in the front seat and climbed into the driver's seat herself and drove off and neither one of us stopped her.

"Ethan, what the hell?"

He looked surprised by my response than all we had heard in the past few minutes. "What did you expect me to do? Just be happy about the fact that the love of my life cheated on me?"

"God you are stupid."

"HEY" he protested.

"If you can't figure it out yourself, then you are stupid." I said, somehow taking Esme's side.

"Figure what out?!"

"That Rayn is your kid Ethan!" the wind whistled and the sky darkened as Ethan Lee Davis realized all of it.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: ETHAN LEE DAVIS

We both sat inside the library with yellow rimmed windows, shivering from the sudden climate change of the weather. Abigail did not speak a word and I was happy about it because I needed time to process this. I remember the first time with Esme and I also remember the last but I couldn't figure out how it could have been possible. I didn't even understand why she had to hide it from me. It's not like I would say anything; in fact I would definitely stand with her, whatever her decision was. Then why did she hide it?
