Isobel Wortley was never anyone's idea of a marriageable young woman, not blessed with the features of a society debutante, educated in a scatter-gun manner from her father's library rather than a proper finishing school and indulged by the eccentric parson until his death to believe that the only human being she needed to please was herself.

Now living happily alone in the small cottage that the old man willed her and blissfully independent of any other person, she is torn from this familiar and easy life by the chance encounter with a bizarre and powerful artefact that changes her from the ferociously independent woman that she was into a scared and unsure mermaid, trapped in a world that was not made for her and trying to make the best of the odd fate that has been dealt to her.

Isabel struggles to make a life for herself as both a woman who does not fit into society and a mermaid living in the world of humanity, trying to find both a means of defining herself as an individual and a way to make sense of what she has become.
