Y/n envied him. They envied all of the praise and admiration he got everywhere he went. Envied how successful he was, and how easy and effortless he made it all look. Y/n even envied him for each and every lovesick fan he had.

If only the 2nd ranked hero's fans knew of what he had gone through to get there. If only they knew of all the pain and suffering, the lying and betrayal, the death and deception.

Y/n knew. Of course they did. After all they were the one and only L/n F/n, an experiment gone wrong. Or as the public knew them, the faulty hero who just couldn't keep up with the rest of them. The poor hero whose career was cut short, first pronounced missing, then dead when they didn't return to homebase from the final mission the hero commission had sent them on.

Hell, they didn't even get a proper hero name, no promised legacy, no starcrossed fans. Nothing.

So though Y/n envied the winged hero, they also pitied him. They knew it wasn't as easy as the charming hero made it out to be.

Hawks had been scooped up by the Hero Commission a year following their own arrival. When the Commission started to doubt Y/n's capability.

Y/n had know this of course but, despite their raging jealousy of the newbie, Y/n and the winged boy had grown quite close. Two lost kids -they were- barely even preteens, just trying to survive in this cruel world.

As the years passed they had grown closer, the best of friends. That was until the two became official heroes and the Commission threw Y/n out like the garbage they were. A failed attempt at the perfect hero, later used as motive for their new willing victim, then finally tossed aside. Used and abandoned.

But Y/n was different now. They possessed new experiences and new abilities. Abilities they were now using on a certain unsuspecting bird.

They waited until the last few fans began to trickle away, leaving the pro vulnerable and alone. Y/n manifested a hand, checked its durability, and urged it onward towards the clueless hero.

Starting off slow, they merely used the index finger of the hand to lightly poke the man's shoulder. Immediately the bird man whipped around, eyes narrowing. Just a second ago he had been waving the last of his fans goodbye, but now he was in full on hero mode.

Y/n recognized this - his body gone rigid, eyes narrowed into slits, and his bright red wings puffed up in defense - and smiled fondly, he hadn't changed a bit.

They were quick to squash that feeling, Y/n was a person on a mission and they would be damned if they got distracted by something so insignificant.

Y/n summoned another hand to join the first, this one gliding over to his face before ever-so-gently ghosting over his cheek and coming to a rest lightly holding his jaw.

Y/n could feel the soft skin of his cheek along with the rough stubble along his jaw through the phantom hand as if it were their own. They then brought another hand to hold the opposite side as well.
