THE DEATH OF HENRIK — had brought great tragedy to the Mikaelson family.  With his death, he had taken a piece of each of his family members' hearts.  Which is why, upon his death, Esther Mikaelson tries to do the impossible: she casts a spell to bring him back, and then make him immortal like the rest of her children. Unfortunately, in her grief, she had botched the spell, and thought she had lost his soul forever as a result.  When the spell did not work, it was like the family had lost him a second time; they had all lost hope.

HOWEVER —   what the Mikaelson family did not know, was that the spell had indeed worked, just not in the way anyone had imagined or wanted. Esther's spell protected Henrik's soul. Instead of immediately bringing Henrik's soul back to his body, the magic Esther had cast held onto Henrik's soul and allowed for him to reincarnate. She had turned him into a strange form of reincarnated doppelgänger. As a result, every few generations, a boy would be born with Henrik's soul, replicating his face over the next thousand years, unbeknownst to every single Mikaelson. His soul, so deeply entwined with fate and his immortal siblings, would unknowingly attempt to cross paths with them, but tragedy would always strike. Henrik had, to this day, never been able to regain the family he did not even know he had been separated from.

THAT IS — until one of his reincarnations repeats a family bloodline, and he is reborn as Henry Salvatore.  Once more, living in the land of his first life, which is now a small, quaint town called Mystic Falls, Virginia.  Even more interesting, he crosses paths with several individuals who had known at least one of his former identities in a past life.  All because of the life of one doppelgänger, Elena Gilbert.
