Victoria:

The elevator door opened and my anxiety went through the roof. It was someone who lived in one of the apartments. Jeez, that was a scare. I breathe out with a sigh of relief. The thing I saw earlier gave me a good scare.....

I get to the department and it's already dark out. In winter it gets dark very early and that's what makes the crackheads and creeps come out at night. I still remember the time when clowns used to be out on the street a year ago. I shiver at the thought. Creeeeepppyyyy.

I head to the briefing room to see that I'm early. The room is a dull shade of grey just freshly painted over with the department logo on one side and a tv on the other. a round conference table that could fit 20 people, sits in the center while the windows seep darkness into the lit room. I had been in here countless times but never alone. I sit in one of the chairs and pull out my phone.

I see a text from my best friend:

Lauren: See you know who yet?

Me: No, I'm hoping I don't. I don't need him to ruin my night.

Lauren: Girl everything you've heard about him is a rumor.  You know people talk and say things that don't really happen.

Me:  It's not like he likes me.  I'm an intern and it'll be better if it stayed that way.  I'll talk to you later Laur. <3

As soon as I sent the text, officers start walking in. All laughing and chatting about old weird cases they had been on. This was the night shift, they seemed laid back. It's my first time going on the night shift. I usually take the day shift because it was safer for the department. I am a liability to them. I hated that word, "liability". The sergeant walks in and looks directly at me while everyone else sits down. They didn't know my name. I was nobody. The only one who seemed to know my name was Reyes. He was with Paxton at the fundraisers as well as being best friends. Paxton wasn't here, I know he's night shift so maybe he's off today. That's a relief.

"Intern, what's your name?" The Sargeant says.

"Victoria Hays, sir."

"Hello Victoria, this is night shift. We'll be out for the whole night. Let's see who we wanna pair you with..." he says

While he was looking around, someone barges in through the door.

"Sorry I'm late, my unit (Police Car) broke down." He said panting.

It was Paxton. I'm praying that it's not him. Please don't be him.

"Since Archer is late, I'm sure you can take Miss Hays here on patrol with you tonight." The Sargeant says.

FUCK! I don't want to! I frown while they both exchange looks quietly. I'm sure Paxton is cursing in his head right now because he's stuck with me AGAIN. I sit quietly because my protest would make things worse for me. These guys know how to mess with you so you have to be careful.

The briefing ends and everyone has to go to their units. I get up and wait for Paxton to go out the door first. He just looks at me and tells me to hurry tf up. Are you kidding me? I'm just as unhappy being stuck with you so trust me Paxton I would love to go with someone else if I had a choice.

We go down a flight of stairs that are slippery so if I fall one day then that's the end of me. The stairs lead to a basement door that leads out into the parking behind the building. It's dark and eerie. I'm following him to the car and he goes around towards the passenger side.

I think for a moment maybe he's opening the door for me. But to disappoint he opens it to grab his stuff and throw it in the trunk. What a gentleman... He closes the door and goes to his side and gets in. What a douche, at least should've left it open for me to get in.

I open the door and get in. It's pure silence while he's fixing papers in a folder. I stare out the window hoping there's not much communication tonight.

"Alright, ground rules intern no talking until spoken to, I'll tell you if you can get out of this unit or not, and no eating in my car. Capish?" He says with an attitude.

"Look I'm as unhappy as you are. If you didn't show up late then I wouldn't be stuck with you right now." I roll my eyes.

He looks at me with a dead look on his face. He starts driving out of the parking lot in silence. I made my point clear. He has his panties in a twist just because he decided he wants to be late. What car problem...? I can see right through his lies.

It's 30 minutes into the shift, it's a quiet night. Then all of a sudden the radio goes off. An officer radioing: "10-37 Burglary in progress @ 1855 East River Road."

Paxton grabs the radio "Dispatch, P-175 show me in route."

He turns on the lights and sirens. Alright, at least he'll be out of the car for a bit. It'll make it a bit less cramped in here. This dude is running all the red lights like a maniac, not even slowing down to check if cars are coming! I'm gonna die....

We get to the scene and he put the car in park really fast. He gets out and looks at me all smug.

"Stay." He says before I can protest that I'm not a dog! He shuts the door and says something in his radio. I'm gonna go crazy if I have to spend the whole night with him. Who the fuck does he think he is bruh...

I watch him as he walks towards the house with two other officers. The driveway is empty so it looks like no one is home. I wonder if that's why the burglar targeted this house. Suddenly the radio goes off.

"The perp is on foot, I REPEAT the perp is on foot headed East on River," Paxton says.

Then I just see a guy in all black clothes run past the car and 3 cops right behind him. Paxton was right on his trail. It's kinda funny actually to watch him run and struggle to catch the guy. They all disappear into the dark street.

Now we play the waiting game.
