Victoria:
I watched for them but I couldn't see anyone. I looked around as much as a I could but there was no one peering through the darkness. I know I shouldn't be worried about him because he can take care of himself. I don't know why but I get this anxious feeling when I'm out with these guys. Anything can happen at any moment. While I was lost in my own thoughts I hear a loud thud.
It was Paxton with the guy who had ran. He had him face first on the hood of the car, handcuffed. Ouch. Looked like he had tried to fight one of them and ended up with a black eye, well that's unfortunate. Paxton looked me in the eye but I couldn't tell what was going on behind his blank expression. The guy yelling slurs to Paxton snaps us both out of whatever was just happening.
They put the guy in another officers unit and it leaves. Paxton gets in to start his paperwork on the computer. I wanted to ask him what had happened but I'm worried he'll yell at me for some bullshit.
"I know you wanna ask. He was trying to break into this house but luckily the family that lived here were on vacation. The neighbors called it in. As soon as we walked up he ran out the back door over the fence. He ended up running to the next street where Jackson tackled him. He tried to put up a fight and got elbowed by accident." He says while staring at his computer.
"To be fair he kinda had it coming." I say nonchalantly.
He laughs. I was being serious and he laughs. It's the end of the world.
"What? Are you laughing? Who are you and what have you done with Paxton?" I say with a small smile.
"I can't laugh? You're actually funny when you're serious. You're so little so it's funny." He says.
"I am NOT little!" I stick my tongue out at him.
"Whatever you say princess." He says while still looking at his computer.
I roll my eyes and cross my arms. I can be very stubborn but I absolutely hate when people call me little. I'm 23 for gods sake. He finished his report and we're off to patrolling the streets again. It wasn't silent this time. We talked about many things. He's still a brute though.
"Okay what's your favorite color?" I say carrying the conversation.
"Isn't that a bit basic?" He says lifting a brow.
"Well you look basic so I'm asking a basic person this question..." I laugh.
"Did you just call me basic?"
"Um yea. I used the word twice." I say
"Don't make me call you little again princess." He says squinting at me.
"Don't call me princess either!" I yell.
"Black" he says.
"What?"
"My favorite color." He says while looking at the road.
So far I only got the favorite food, hobbies, color, and the acquaintance questions. I don't know him well but he drinks his coffee black so he can't be trusted. Or any man for that matter. My past relationships are just not it. But it's nice to talk to someone then sit in silence. That's just very awkward.
Christmas music is playing in the background, the heater is blasting but numb nuts has his window rolled down cuz he felt like a "roasted turkey in here." I'm wearing a thick black sweater yet my bones are shivering because it's so cold. I look at the time and its 2:43 am. I yawn, I'm not used to being out this late.
"Wanna go get some coffee? If you start yawning then I'm gonna start yawning and we can't have that." He says.
"That'd be great but black coffee kills you faster just saying." I chuckle.
"I count on it." He says smuggling.
"I count on it" I mouth back.
We pull into a gas station and I jump out to stretch my legs. I've been in the car for too long! Paxton fills up the tank and I wait for him to finish so we can go in. Gas stations are hella sketchy at night. It's known to be a very common place for human trafficking. No thank you, if they took me they'd bring me right back.
We walk in and the door chimes. The look I got from the cashier was judgment. Yes I'm with a cop what is your problem... This happens way to often to the point where people don't realize that it's a normal thing. I walk to the bathroom. I HAVE TO PEE SO BAD!
I wash my hands and walk out. Coffee. I need coffee. I grab a cup of coffee and a handful of creamers. I like my coffee sweet not bitter. Paxton hardcore judging me from afar but I don't give a fuck. He walks up to the cashier and pays for my coffee. I don't let anyone pay for me but I didn't catch him in time. We walk out into the cold, my hands wrapped around my warm coffee cup.
"Thank you." I say. I was looking at his back.
He turned.
"For what?" He says
"Paying for my coffee." I say with a smile.
Before he could say anything it started snowing. Little drizzles landing on my sweater. It was the first snow. I look up with the biggest smile. I loved winter time. My hair had so many! I look down and see Paxton watching me with a slight smile on his face. It was a genuine one.
"Alright princess we have to go." He says but I knew he didn't want to take this moment from me. It was a good moment where everything just felt surreal. I frown.
"Do we have to?" I say.
"You're going to freeze to death if you stay out here." He had a point.
I follow him back to the car and get in. It was warm like a blanket wrapped around you. I drank my coffee and looked out the window not realizing I had fallen asleep.
