It was a cold day, but it wasn't just cold it was the worst kind of cold. It had been raining constantly for days it seemed, the company was soaked to the bone with little to no chance of getting a warm. Spirits were low with no one conversing, finally someone spoke up "lads its not looking much better and this mud must be killing the poor ponies, I think it's time to make camp and wait this out". there were mumbles or agreement amongst the groups, they decided to make camp. As always Fili and his younger brother Kili were in charge of making sure the ponies were secure for the night, they were talking and joking while they worked, of course that would be expected seeing as they were the youngest in the company. Suddenly there was a large gust of wind and the pony Kili was attempting to secure reared and shook loose, Kili lost his grip on the reins and the pony was off. The next thing Fili saw was the back of his brothers coat at he ran after the spooked animal. Fili called out for the company and set off into the trees after his reckless younger brother. Kili was barley aware of his brother shouting his name and the sound of footsteps lumbering through the woods behind him, but he didn't dare look back the animal was just meters away from his grasp. Fili called out to his brother who was blatantly unaware of the river just 50 yards up ahead, he knew that from all the rain that the river must be swollen beyond any chance of tameing. By the time Kili saw the river it was too late, he was barreling at full speed towards the monster of a river. The pony hit the water first loosing its footing and being swept down stream. Fili watched as the pony and along with it his brother were washed downstream, Fili only having a split second to think dove into the icy water after his brother. Back on shore the company just reached the edge of the ragging river in time to see amongst the swirling water and floating debris the heads of the two youngest members of the company, the pony had reached the opposite shore on its own, the brothers weren't so lucky, Fili had grabbed on to the nearest rock he looked around frantically for a sign of his brother, he immediately regretted looking he just caught sight of his brother when a piece of unknown debis slammed into the side of his head. Kili's head went under, the company back on shore were trying desperately to get a rope into the water in hopes of getting the boys out in time. Having seen his youngest nephew's head sink under the surface Thorin dove into the cold swirling water, he swam for the spot where he last saw the black mop of hair sink below the surface. Time and time again he dove under the surface after what seemed like an eternity his fingers brushes what seemed like material, having felt what he desperately hoped was Kili's coat Thorin felt invigorated he dove a little deeper spending every ounce of strength he had left he grabbed onto the dead weight that was his nephew. Trying desperately not to think of how long Kili must have been under Thorin dragged his lifeless body ashore. The company hauled the two freezing bodies out of the raging river. Thorin was coughing up a storm but he never even crossed Fili's mind, he rushed to his limp lifeless brother. Fili tried not to let the panic that was so deeply rooted in his chest escape, he remembered the promise he made his mother that he would bring his brother home safe, He suddenly doubted that he would be able to keep that promise. He leaned over his brothers cold limp figure and wished with all his might that he would just breath, he put his finger tips to his neck desperately feeling for a pulse, much to his despair he felt nothing. Kili had no pulse and he wasn't breathing not to mention the gaping wound on his forehead. Fili being absolutely histarical he started pushing down on his brothers chest watching the water pour from him mouth. Thorin having regained his senses sauntered over to where his nephew lay lifeless on the ground and his older brother tears streaming down his face was desperately pushing down on the others chest, it was no use Thorin had failed, his nephew was dead all because he didn't get to him fast enough "Fili I think it's time to stop, I'm sorry he's gone". Fili felt his uncle's hand on his shoulder and he vaguely hears him say something but he was too focused on his brother, his lips were turning blue but he kept pushing on his chest the bent over his brother plugged his nose with his hand tilted his head back and breathed 2 breaths into his lungs and then he want back to pushing on his chest. Minutes past but every second felt like hours. After what felt like an eternity his brother coughed, just a faint cough but his heart was beating and he was breathing again, Fili rolled him in his side attempting to get the last of the water from his lungs. His eyes were still closed but he was alive and that was all that mattered. The other dwarves helped get the boys back to camp. Kili was lucky to be alive but thanks to his brother he got to continue on his journey to the lonely mountain. The wound on his forehead was substancial and he lost a lot of blood but to Fili none of that mattered, he had a chance of holding onto his word, he would do anything to keep his promise.
