I struggled out of Grey's firm hold but to no avail, the creepy man held my arm with an iron grip. I'd just started to panic when Grey abruptly released my arm and bolted to the other side of the room. My mind felt as though someone had reached in and searched around. I closed my eyes trying to shake the feeling but instead only making it worse. I collapsed onto the bed. Sounds mixed together around me; Grey yelling, footsteps, the door unlocking then locking again. I even heard whispers of darkness and light before passing out.
When I awoke, I was thankfully still on the bed. Despite the lack of windows, I somehow knew that the sun had just set. My cell was pitch black but I could sense someone, or something, watching me from the darkness. I looked around to find a glowing orange eye staring at me. I miraculously held back my scream.
"Wh-what are you?" I whispered, my voice shaking against my will.
"Oh, right, you can't see... My mistake!" A cheerful girl's voice answered me, accompanied by the scratch of a match. Fire lit the room. "There we go!" She said, holding a candle.
The girl looked about 15, possibly younger. She wore black and white leggings and an lime green shirt with a short leather jacket. Her skin was tan and she had long black hair pulled into a loose side braid. One long strand of her hair was dyed orange. However, that wasn't the thing that stood out about her. One of her eyes was a dark brown but the other was orange and it glowed, with actual light!
"I see you're interested in my eye!" She said after a few moments of my staring. "It takes a bit, but you'll get used to it!"
"W-wha...-how... How is that possible!?" I asked, astounded.
"Anything's possible now! Compared to what you'll see in the morning, a glowing eye doesn't even make the 'That's not possible!' list!"
My head was spinning. What else was there? "Wait- What's happening in the morning?"
"You'll be outta that cell and into The Grotto!"
"The Grotto?"
"Yup... I know, its bad but I didn't invent the name! I probably would've just called it 'The Cave' or 'The Hole'... Ok maybe not that... But anyways, its basically this hidden cave system under the forest. We've taken refuge here until we deal with The Hunters and Morphed so... I think we'll be here a while."
There where those terms again; Hunters, Morphed... What were they and what 'we' was she referring to? I still had so many questions but I didn't think my brain could take any more confusion.
"Is it ok if I get some sleep?" I asked. The girl seemed sad that I was ending the very one-sided conversation but she shrugged.
"Sure, you're going to need it. Tomorrow is going to be tiring. I'll probably be here when you get up but if not, my name's Iris in case you wanted someone a little less foreign to show you around the place."
I nodded then tucked myself into the thin blanket on the bed and drifted off to sleep, my first intentional sleep in a while.
