I opened my unused journal to the first page and began to write.
May 17th
"All I hear is Kiara's wails. Kiara was my neighbour. Her daughter, Jayden, had hung herself to escape our fate. When we found her body, Kiara took her down and cried beside her. The rest of us had watched at a distance before leaving. Only my mother, Bridget, had stayed with Kiara. Everyone grieved, some more than others. Jayden was always quiet. She never had an opinion. She just did as told, looking very distant. She obviously couldn't handle the situation, and chose not to live with it any longer. No one knew what Jayden was really like. Only Kiara... and me. Every night Jayden would creep into my room and wake me. She'd told me what she was going to do, but she'd told me to never tell a soul. She'd said that I was the only one she trusted. I let her go through with it... I don't regret my decision. I only wish Kiara would stop."
Hours later, Kiara did stop. I didn't leave my room to find out why but I couldn't stop all the reasons from forming in my head. Maybe fatigue had disrupted her, or Bridget had finally calmed her down. But with nice thoughts, there are always dark ones. Maybe she'd decided to join Jayden... I scolded myself at that. "Kiara knows she is needed, she wouldn't kill herself over a loss. Besides, Bridget would never let her do that." I thought.
My thoughts were interrupted by my stomach, which grumbled hungrily. I sighed and sat up on my bed, looking around. My room had purple walls, and dark wood flooring and furniture. It was a small room but it was perfect for me. I was a square with no windows. If you stood at the door looking in, my bed was along the wall to your right. A mirror was right across from the bed and there was a dresser and desk along the far wall. A soft lime green rug surrounded my bed. I smiled and left my room, making sure to close the door behind me. My room was at the end of a hall. Four other doors were situated throughout it. At the end, a staircase led down to the main floor.
I headed to the kitchen. It had white walls, dark granite counter tops and dark wood cupboards. I made my way to the stainless steel fridge. I grabbed a glass of milk, made myself a nutella sandwich and sat down at the table. I hummed as I ate until I realized that Jodi was watching me from across the table. I hadn't noticed her sit down. I blinked at her and put down my sandwich. Jodi was my sister but we wern't really sisters. Bridget couldn't have children so she'd adopted Jodi and I. Along with Finn, and the twins, Kayla and Nala. Jodi had medium dirty blonde hair and green eyes. She was thin and average height. Jodi was only 14 but she was very mature, thought with curiosity and brilliance.
"What song were you humming?" She asked quietly.
I thought for a moment. "I can't remember what it's called." I said sadly. She shrugged. "How's Kiara?" I asked when she didn't continue the conversation.
"She went back to her house. Bridget said she would look after her until the grief subsides. But I think she's just making sure Kiara doesn't follow Jayden's example." She answered, whispering the last sentence to add emphasis.
I shook my head. "Kiara wouldn't kill herself over Jayden. She knows that Bridget needs her to look after us."
"True but Kiara lost her only child. She's obviously thought about it."
"Maybe..."
"CELESTINE!!" Finn yelled from upstairs. I ran up to his room, abandoning my half-eaten sandwich. Finn's door was ajar and there were green bubbles spilling out. I pushed open the door. The room was glowing green and there was a mountain of bubbles beside Finn's closet. I soon realized that the mountain was Finn. "What happened?" I asked him. He wiped the bubbles from his face and pointed to the small green hand prints on the wall. I left him to his mess and went to interrogate the twins. I walked into their room and interrupted their giggling. I stood with my hand on my hip trying to look as intimidating as possible. "What did you do?" I asked.
"N-nothing..." Kayla said immediately. Nala was silently staring at me.
"I know you two bubbled Finn's room and I'd like to know why."
Nala was now staring at Kayla, her short brown hair falling into her eyes. "I'm so-"
"We were just trying to lighten the mood..." Kayla cut Nala off. Nala glared at her. Kayla tried to look innocent.
I smiled slightly. "Green bubbles are not the way to-", I was suddenly thrown onto Kayla's bed by a huge earthquake. I heard the front door smash open and Bridget calling us. I heard Kiara's voice too, which made me a slight bit relieved.
"Get under cover, it's here!!" They kept screaming. I grabbed the twins and we crashed against the floor. My heart was racing and the twins were crying. I noted Jodi muttering a prayer beside me and I saw green bubbles floating around as Finn hit the floor. Toys fell from shelves, windows cracked and people screamed. I held the twins tighter and closed my eyes.
The end had finally come.
