Somewhere far away, a rumbling sound was heard disturbing my sleep, the sound of engines.
My body protested from constantly sitting up and I had a hard time changing position. Several days without food made me weaker than ever, so I did everything I could to suppress the sound and continue sleeping.
But when the screams began to echo through the tent, I opened my eyes with a jerk and pressed my forehead against the grille to get a better view.
Something unusual was happening. The guards moved systematically around the tent and slammed their sticks against the cages and shouted things that sounded like threats and swear words, while two large trucks backed towards us.
With horror, I realized that they were walking around picking out prisoners, weak, dirty people who they violently pulled out of their cramped cages and threw up on the deck.
With my heart in my throat, my eyes slid over the cages and followed every movement of the brutes that approached.
But no one went in my direction.
Anxiety crept in and I was annoyed at my own relief when I realised that they only chose the old and weak.A moment later the screams were silenced and the trucks drove away, only muffled sobs were heard, but soon the tent was as quiet and smelly again and the heat was as unbearable as before.
But still, everything felt even worse.
My life had suddenly become more uncertain than two hours ago and dark thoughts were spinning in my head.
What would happen to them? And what would happen to me? When were they going to choose me and why?
The uncertainty was the worst, being forced to sit there and wait for my own death, could it get any worse?
I refused to answer my own question, deep inside I suspected that this was just the beginning. With tears running down my cheeks, I pulled my knees up under my chin and squeezed my legs as hard as I could.
Everything felt so hopeless and the rescue so terribly far away.
