A gasp broke out amongst the clan as Sunshatter presented the dead body of their fallen leader. Sunshatter had a grim look on his face, and Mudpaw felt nervous. "I found his body at the gorge." He growled. "Must have fallen in." Mudpaw bit back a shout. That was a lie! But, if Sunshatter thought it was alright, maybe lies were what was right? He furrowed his brow, confused and frightened at the same time.
"Sunshatter, you're our leader now!" Some cat called out from the crowd. The tall calico Tom swept his rigid long tail around the clan cats and leapt onto the highrock. "I am sad to say the our beloved leader Oakstar has passed. It is my duty, though not my wish, to take his place." A murmur of doubt erupted form the cats, and he saw Owlbranch and Stormwhisker exchanging doubtful glances. "So.." Mudpaw started, then broke off. The Tom glanced his way. "Yes?" He asked briskly. Mudpaw shuffled his paws uneasily. "Are you going to go to the moonstone?" He asked hesitantly. Sunshatter frowned. "I don't see how we need guidance from random dead cats." He snorted. "I will not be making contact with our warrior ancestors."
A murmur of disapproval broke out amongst the cats. "Who does he think he is?" Houndleap growled. "This has never been done before!" Owlbranch hissed. Mudpaw frowned at their disloyalty. They should be following their leader. Sunshatter didn't seem to notice. "There are also certain... rules I would like to go over." The cats fell silent. "My first one is based on a very dire issue" he paused. "Many kits are lost every moon to foxes, badgers, other clans. They are in danger. We must do something." Mudpaw felt like this couldn't go in a right direction.
"They lack training! Kits have no skill to fight off threats, this must be changed. From now on, kits will be apprenticed at 4 moons." A gasp of shock rose up from the crowd. Shouts of protest wailed in uprising, angry and upset and confused. "This is ridiculous!" Houndleap yowled. "Never!" Owlbranch cried. Sunshatter stared down coldly. "This is my decision, as leader. " He made sure to emphasize. "My second rule is that roles such as medicine cat, deputy, and leader, can be challenged. The winner assumes the loser's role, and the loser joins our warrior ancestors." He smiled, a sort of unsettling smile. Mudpaw shuddered. But he Had to follow Sunshatter, he was the young apprentice's personal role model!
Mudpaw was knee deep in thought when a crisp voice echoed around the clearing, and he watched as heads turned to the defiant Ginger and black figure standing up in the crowd. Houndleap's voice rang clear and loud around the hushed assembly. "I challenge you."
