Chapter 29

Valentina stood and stared at the door which Christian had just left through with a strange feeling resonating through her body.

She rallied her thoughts to determine what this sensation was but she could not place a finger on it.

This was not the first time that they had been parted; she had left him multiple times throughout their centuries together.

But now, she was realising, Christian had left her.

That had never happened before. Despite everything, Christian was the one that had always wanted to stay together. It had been Valentina that had bolted all those times before and she was only now beginning to realise why.

She was afraid.

Deep down, she had been terrified that one day he would leave her, that he would abandon her, that she did it first so he couldn’t.

But now he had and Valentina was realising that she loved him. These humans speak of love and soulmates and Valentina had wanted the same when she was alive.

What if she had to die first before she could be with her soulmate, Christian?

And what if he never came back?

Valentina simply watched the door. If she stayed here long enough, he may come back but she had seen the look in his eyes.

He wasn’t coming back.

Silence filled the chapel for minutes afterwards until her uncle awkwardly broke the tension, bringing them back to the situation at hand.

“What do we do with the hybrid?” Radon stepped forward, looking to his brother for orders.

Dracul looked at his daughter as he spoke, a tense moment passing between them, “Kill them both.”

Valentina’s eyes flashed towards Jessica in panic.

Both?” Elijah queried, not knowing that Jessica was a hybrid.

But Dracul only had eyes for his daughter, “Did you really think I would not be able to hear her heartbeat?”

Valentina narrowed her eyes, not saying anything as Elijah and Marceau grabbed Jessica, Elijah pulling her head back to expose her neck.

Lucius let out a ferocious roar from beside them, his features beginning to contort as the wolf raged inside of him.

Marceau turned towards Lucius, whilst Valentina hissed at Elijah.

“Release her,” Valentina ordered him.

“I think you should be less worried with your little pet,” Dracul’s voice resonated through the chapel, making it difficult for Valentina to locate where he was behind her, “And more worried for yourself.”

Valentina paused for a moment.

“Valentina!” Lucius shouted in warning.

Darting across the chapel, Valentina looked back at where she had been stood and saw her father poised with a stake, long and thick, in the air, ready to run it through her back.

Valentina’s body surged with rage as memories of her previous entombments sprang to life.

She should have seen it coming, but she hadn’t.

Dracul turned when he saw she had moved and looked across at her, an expression of boredom etched across his face.

“You wish to stake me again?” Valentina did not understand why.
