As soon as Chabashira-sensei left the room, I stood up and addressed the class.

"Could everyone listen to me for a moment?" I asked the class.

"Today is the beginning of our high school lives. For the next three years, we will all be classmates together. So, why don't we introduce ourselves and get to know each other?" I suggested.

"I agree! Most of us don't know much at all about each other yet, most of us don't even know everyone's name." Kushida said, supporting me.

The tense air seemed to ease up after Kushida and I had spoken.

"I'll start. I'm Hirata Yousuke. Feel free to call me Yousuke, if you like. My hobby is playing sports, especially soccer. I played soccer in junior high and I'm planning on playing it here, too. It's nice to meet you all!" I said.

Just as I had hoped, the ice seemed to be completely broken. Students began to talk, and many students seemed to be glad to meet each other.

"How about everyone introduces themselves, starting from the front.  Does that work for everyone?" I asked, rhetorically.

"Silence." someone in the back said assertively.

Everyone turned to look at the man.

He had long, black hair and was about 6 feet tall.

"Why should I introduce myself to such insignificant fools?" he retorted.

"Who the hell do you think you are!?" yelled a shorter boy with beige-colored hair.

"I won't participate in such pointless nonsense," the domineering student declared.

"You'll see. This class was doomed from the beginning. The school's system won't allow this class to succeed. It's that simple."

"The school's system? What do you mean?" I questioned.

The boy ignored my question as he hung his jacket over his shoulder and left the room. Some other students followed, not wanting to participate in the introductions, I suppose. Around 10 students ended up leaving, so it was quite a loss.

I couldn't help but wonder if this incident was my fault. I was the one who made people do this. It was selfish of me to do so, wasn't it? I wasn't trying to cause a divide so early. But I had. It was my fault. I've just begun here and I've already messed up something so simple.

"I don't care what they think," said Kushida. "I think we should continue with the introductions."

Kushida's words snapped me out of my inner thoughts.

The members of our class who stuck around seemed to agree with her. However, it seemed as if the mood had irreparably changed.

Who is he? And what did he mean by "This school's system"?  Those thoughts stirred around my head.

"Alright," I said. "Now that that's out of the way, let's begin."

"I can start," said Kushida. I figured that made sense, as after that incident most of my classmates may be apprehensive to introduce themselves. Kushida wasn't like that, however.

"I'm Kushida Kikyou," she started. "My goal is to become friends with everyone in our class. Even those students who left should deserve a chance to make friends in our class."

She seemed genuine. I, too, had hoped our class would have a better start. But it wasn't entirely hopeless.

"I want to get to know all your names and faces so we can become friends. And if you'd like to exchange contact information I would be happy to!" she continued. "Anyways, that's all from me. I hope we all have a great time here!"
