Too late at night, with no show of the boy, and staring at the waters, I'm reminded of memories.
Drowning.
I force myself to move away, towards the center of the city. As far away as possible from that water, from the memories. The water droplets on my fingertips move towards the city, pulling me in.
A hand clasps my mouth. "Don't scream," His voice echoes in my ear. I glance around at Pietro leaning, a glare on his face. "You shouldn't be here," He snaps.
He pulls his hand away from my mouth, turning it to my arm. "I need to talk to you," I say, quietly, turning around.
"If you're here, so late at night, I know," He says. His blue eyes meet mine, piercing into me. He glances at me. "May I?"
I frown. "May you what?"
He sighs. "I'd rather not explain it," He picks me up, too fast that I can't register it. "Hold on tight," He murmurs into my ear. When I don't move my hands, he moves them himself around his neck. I feel the whip of air and close my eyes immediately, hearing him chuckle at it. My eyes flicker open, watching the city pass me in a blur. I stare, surprise flickering across my face. This is what he sees every time he runs.
Beautiful, despite myself.
He stops and I clutch his shoulders again. Against his jaw, I feel him grin at it. "You see what I mean?" He asks.
"I guess," I grudgingly admit.
"So," He says. I register where I'm at. On top of an apartment building, viewing the city. Or a quick way to dispose of me. "What do you want?"
"Pietro," I say, tentatively. He tenses at his name. "I know you're working with Ultron,"
He tenses. He glances at me, once over, testing to see if I'm ready to attack. "Cutting right to the point," He chuckles. "What about it?"
"I came to convince you to stop,"
He crosses his arms. "Why should I?"
"Why are you joining?"
He clenches his jaw. "Because your beloved Stark killed my parents,"
I stare at him as he registers my emotions. Shock is all I feel, though I don't dare show it. "How?" I whisper.
"A bomb. By the beautiful Stark Industries," He mutters. "So, in fact, I do have a good reason,"
"Revenge won't make you happy," I say softly.
"How would you know?" He demands. "You've killed people, right? I saw it on your face,"
He was studying me that closely? I brush it off, ignoring that thought. "I've tried. It only brings you down deeper,"
His anger turns, simply confusion. "What happened to you, Avenger?"
I try to smile. "Two years ago, I met a boy. We were in the same class, and we both shared a love for the ocean," Pietro's face falls. "We were driving late at night a year later, after I had met his parents. I'm a foster kid," I say, quietly. "So I was excited to have a real family. He was driving me to the foster home. I told him that the drive across the bridge was faster. He didn't agree to it first, but when I pleaded, he went for it.
"It was dark. Rainy, with the moon clouded over. Then, out of nowhere, a semi hit his car, sending it into the water. I woke up, alive. But he was dead," Pietro's eyes whip to mine.
