Organizer's Note

Hello and welcome to Not All Heroes Wear Capes, the fifth group challenge from the formerly exclusive FB TapTales Group. We're always expanding to suitable platforms and this is the third challenge to be offered here as well as on Inkitt.

The concept is simple and follows the basics of our other challenges: the first chapter introduces you to the idea and background information—then each chapter after it will feature a short story about a different character. In this book, those characters are ordinary citizens who are exposed to a life-altering substance in an asteroid either naturally or via an experiment conducted by one of the government's leading scientists, Hector D'cruz. They experience rather odd superpowers and tell how it impacts their lives. In the end, an epilogue chapter will wrap up the fate of every character involved.

We hope this adventure-packed story is something everyone will enjoy. Happy reading!

As usual, this project was created by a few of us chatting back and forth. We were wondering what it would be like to have superpowers, and then we took it a step further...what if those superpowers went horribly wrong? All sorts of combinations were thrown out there. I'm really surprised it hasn't spawned a series by now.

Our group collaborations have always been fun despite the amount of hard work that goes into them. This one has been no different. I'm extremely appreciative of everyone that has taken part, both as a writer or a reader. Thank you for your contributions. - Poteet

And thus it begins...

150437TJUN21 (15th of June 2021 - 4:37 am - Denver, Colorado)

Jeb swivels in his chair, humming a tune as he surveys all the monitors sitting in front of him. Deep space monitoring for the Department of Defense is a tedious job, but someone has to do it. Just when he takes a large, messy bite of his double bacon cheeseburger—a large blip shows up on one of his screens, then another and another...all of them glow with the light of a large unidentified object hurtling through space.

Instantly, his fingers fly over the keyboard. At first glance, it appears to simply be a comet. With further study, he can see it's actually an asteroid. Alarms blare behind him and he rushes to make sure before calling in his superior.

"Uh...Sergeant? You might want to come in here!"

"What is it this time, Jeb? I was in the middle of...holy shit! Is that what I think it is?"

She promptly takes a seat next to him, wincing as the loud alarms pierce her ears. Jeb momentarily shoos her out of the way to flick a few switches on the console beside her.

"Can you figure out where it's gonna land?"

"I'm trying..."

Calculations are made. The trajectory is charted. With that in hand, Sergeant Stilles is on the phone to relay the information. Jeb fidgets at his desk in the meantime. It seems like forever before anyone on the other line answers. Finally, the Sergeant gets ahold of someone.
