"If you think I will agree to something like that then you're sadly mistaken. I don't need a male creature in order to survive."

"Miss. Volkov, you do not understand the seriousness of this situation. These creatures are savage, they do not possess a modicum of sympathy. Being alone out there is the same as walking into a group of blood-sucking vampires. No offense."

"None taken."

"With the protection of the strongest creatures, you wouldn't have to worry about survival."

"And that comes with a price of giving myself over to some male creature that I don't even know. What if he's a serial killer?"

"Everybody inside this prison has done atrocious crimes. One is not better than the other."

And that should make me feel better?

"How is sleeping with someone for protection better than being on my own?"

"I'll give you a small example. There was a Shewolf here before, she was sentenced for petty crimes. You remind me a lot of her. Just like you, she refused the Protection."

I didn't want to listen to this story because I had a slight idea how it was going to end up.

"She survived roughly twelve hours on her own."

"What do you mean?"

"There was a rowdy dragon who noticed her. He dragged her into his cell when her guard was down, used her for days, and then passed her onto one of his buddies who did the same. Unfortunately, she killed herself before she could come back to my office. And make no mistake, she was a strong wolf."

I didn't react even though I knew it was going to be bad.

"Trust me. It's better to belong to one male rather than get passed around with the rest."

"I will stand by my decision."

Morris stared at me like he was feeling sorry for me, there was something else clear in those blue eyes.

Sadness.

He wasn't saying it out loud but he believed that my decision was going to become my ultimate downfall.

And I was hell-bent on proving him wrong.

"I understand your concerns for my well-being but I can take care of myself."

There was one thing that my brother taught me well and that was to fight. I wasn't trained in any martial arts but knew how to protect myself when needed.

"Is this your final decision?" Morris asked, staring at me from beneath the rims of his glasses.

He wanted me to change my mind but I was a stubborn girl. It was my stubbornness that led me to this prison.

"Yes, sir."

He gave me a nod, but he looked disappointed. "Very well then. Eroan will show you to your cell."

Danny met me in the hallway. She looked nervous as she should be. "There's a Prison Protection Program that you can sign up for. According to the warden, it makes the lives of the female creatures easier. Sounds sexist right?"

"What did you choose?"

"I prefer being solo."

"Inmate! Start walking!" the shifter guard called Eroan called out.

"Good luck, Danny."

I sat inside a small buggy that rolled forward towards my cell. It was already starting to make sense what Morris had just told me. Male creatures dominated this prison. There were hardly any females in the vicinity and the ones that I was looking at were completely in control of the males that were treating them like slaves.
