"Do you have a certain taste for anything?" Gio asked as they sat down at one of the tables near the back of the small cafe.
If Enzo remembered correctly, it was called Carver Café. He caught a glimpse of the sign before the two walked in. He glanced over the menu briefly before glancing at Gio.
"I'll just have one of their burgers and fries."
Gio nodded and opened his mouth, but before he had a chance to utter a single word, a voice interrupted him.
"Oh Gio it is you. Shouldn't you be at home resting?"
Enzo shifted his gaze to the right finding a man and a young female standing by his side. The man had a mustache and curly dark brown hair with chocolate brown eyes. He could clearly tell the man had no sense of fashion if the regular blue jeans and white shirt were anything to go by.
The young female by his side had a very pale complexion with long, straight dark brown hair. She had a heart shaped face with a wide forehead, her nose is thin while her cheeks are prominent. She was pretty sure, but Enzo didn't swing that way.
"Charlie what a surprise. I wasn't expecting to see you here on a Sunday evening. I figured you'd be at home watching some baseball."
Gio stood up to shake Charlie's hand as a sign of greeting before gesturing to the table.
"Would you care to join us?"
Charlie looked a bit hesitant, unsure of what to really say. He was painfully awkward at times wasn't he?
"Are you sure, I mean...Bella and I wouldn't want to overstep our boundaries or anything..."
"No no it's fine," Gio reassured with a smile. "We don't mind."
Um I do, Enzo thought but kept his mouth shut as he watched Charlie and his daughter, Bella, sit themselves down at their table.
"Oh were are my manners?" Gio chuckled. "This is my nephew Enzo. Enzo this is my boss, Charlie Swan and his daughter Bella. He just flew in not too long ago so we decided to grab something to eat."
You decided, I didn't even want to come, Enzo thought bitterly.
"Oh yeah?" Charlie replied turning his brown eyes on Enzo who tensed up slightly. "Where are you coming from?"
"California," came Enzo's muttered response.
"Charlie, Bella, Gio. It's good to see you three again," came a woman's voice.
An African American woman came into view. She had curly black hair and pouty lips. She offered Enzo a smile once she caught sight of the unfamiliar face.
"And this must be your nephew."
"Good to see you Cora. This is Enzo, he just flew in not too long ago. The kid had an appetite so why not bring him to the best cafe in town?" Gio explained.
Cora hummed, "You mean the only cafe in town."
Gio chuckled. "It's still the best in my books."
"Well, Enzo, is there anything you'd like?"
"Just a burger and some fries....thanks."
"Coming right up. And I assume you three are going to have the usual?"
The others nodded in reply. Cora dismissed herself not too long after. Charlie figured it was a good time to make a bit more conversation with the tense male in front of him.
"So, Enzo, did you do any surfing out there?"
The dark haired male briefly made eye contact with Charlie before averting his gaze to wooden table. He traced a finger over one of the scratch marks earned throughout the years.
"I'm not really a big fan of water."
Something began to edge its way passed the locked doors within Enzo's mind but he forced it back, digging his nail into the carved mark on the table. Just then Cora returned with their plates, saving Enzo from having to explain why that was.
The four of them fell silent as they dug into their food. Well it was more along the lines of Enzo picking at his food eating a fry here and there while the two adults talked amongst themselves.
"May I ask why you moved here?" Bella spoke up for the first time since arriving.
He could feel Gio and Charlie's gaze on them but pretended not to notice as he shrugged his shoulders.
"Just needed a change of scenery. Being in the city...seeing the same things everyday tends to get dull and boring."
"So you just moved in the middle of the school year? Your parents were okay with that?"
Gio cleared his throat, capturing Bella's attention. "It's getting late. Enzo better get ready for his first day at school tomorrow. Maybe you can show him around? But for now, I think he needs some rest. It's been a long day."
Bella nodded. "Yeah...of course....sure."
Enzo was already on his feet as Gio reached into his pocket to pay for their meal, however he was stopped by Charlie who shook his head.
"Don't worry about it I'll pay."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. Go ahead and head home. Besides, we've got an early morning back at the station. It was nice meeting you Enzo."
The teenager nodded. "You too Mr. Swan. You guys have a good night."
