Days turned into weeks, my hunt seemed to be becoming pointless, would I ever find the opportunity, the house, the family, why a family I thought to myself, anyone will do as long as I'm sure.
It was early one evening and I'd only got two cigarettes left in my pack.
"Tay" I shouted up the stairs "I'm just nipping out to get some cigarettes love, do you or the little man want anything."
Tay shouted back down the stairs "I'll have some of that bubble chocolate and get me my menthol cigarettes baby and grab Thomas some cheese chips please."
"Ok love won't be long" I replied, I grabbed my coat from the hook on the wall at the bottom of the stairs and then I don't know why but I went to the closet under the stairs and opened my black backpack to get my gloves, holy shit I thought, panic struck me, my gloves, black hoodie and black and red trainers were gone, my black jeans to.
I went back to the bottom of the stairs and shouted up to Tay slight panic in my voice "baby have you been in the stair closet."
Tay came to the top of the stairs, Thomas in her arms "yes" she said "i washed them and cleaned your trainers, you need to be more carful baby, your clothes are folded and on the side in the laundry room next to your gloves and trainers."
I hesitated for a second and then said "thank you baby... I love you."
Tay looked down at me and smiled "I know" she said and then headed back into the bedroom with Thomas.
My panic subsided as I walked down the hallway past the stair closet and into the kitchen and opened the laundry room door, there folded on the side were my black hoodie and jeans, gloves and trainers placed next to them.
I love her so much I thought to myself with a warm feeling inside me and a smile a mile wide on my face, I picked them all up and went back to the stair closet, I put the trainers, hoodie and jeans back in my backpack and closed the door.
"Won't be long beautiful" I shouted as i put the gloves in my coat pocket and went out of the front door, a slight spring in my step, it was a cold evening, a slight breeze was blowing.
She continues to constantly surprise me I thought to myself of my wife Tay, does she know, does she care, I knew she'd go to hell and back for me, I am that lucky but someone else might not be tonight I thought with the smile still fixed to my face.
The ten minute walk to the shop went by in an instant, I bought two packs of cigarettes, the chips and chocolate and headed back for home, I got about four streets from home and as i wandered up one of the neighbouring roads i noticed an old lady struggling with a case, she was trying to pull it from the trunk of her car.
I pulled my gloves from my coat pocket and put them on without thinking, as I got closer to her I asked "excuse me but do you need some help" she turned slightly startled by my voice, she was wearing a long cream coat and white knitted hat, her grey hair poked slightly under the edges of it.
"thank you" she said "my husband just passed away and I'm trying to get some of his things moved but I just can't seem to get this case out, oh bother."
"Don't worry I'll get that for you, where do you want it" I said with a smile on my face, if only she'd known what I was thinking, just get inside, I'll find my opportunity, I took the case by the handle and lifted it from the trunk and she closed it and I followed her into the house closing the front door behind me, we headed through the front room and into a dimly lit kitchen with a small round table in the corner.
"Put it there" she said and pointed to a solitary chair at the table."
"Have you not got some friends or family that could help you, you shouldn't be moving heavy things by yourself " I said, like I cared, I was just trying to get the one piece of information I needed, are you alone here.
"My son lives in Wisconsin and all my friends are long dead dear, he wants me to move up there to live with him now my Henry is gone" she said.
I was listening but looking round the kitchen, a rolling pin sat in a rack on the counter in front of a window.
"Do you want something for helping me" she said and started to fumble in her bag on the table, her back was to me,
"Yes" I said as I removed the rolling pin from the rack and placed my bag on the counter, I turned to face her back and raised the rolling pin, with one violent swing I hit her on the back of the head, her face slammed into the table and she fell to the floor with a thud pulling her bag on top of her, the contents spilling on to the floor.
Her knitted hat started to change from the once white colour to a vibrant red as blood spilled from her head, her eyes still wide open, that was easy I thought to myself as I replaced the rolling pin in the rack, not a mark on it, I bent down and picked up her purse and opened it.
Yes I thought to myself, someone just got paid, I smiled, I pulled the money out and started to count, fifty, one hundred, two hundred, I stopped at five hundred and twenty two dollars, I dropped the purse on the floor and put the money in my jeans pocket.
Now it looks like a robbery I thought, I checked the old bitch was dead and grabbed my bag of the counter and made my way to the front door, I opened it slightly and looked out, the street was clear, I shut the door behind me and strolled off down the street heading for home taking my gloves off and placing them in my coat pocket.
My mobile phone vibrated in my pocket as I turned into the next street, I pulled it out, it was Tay, I answered, "hey baby nearly home, just a couple of streets away" I said.
Tay replied "could you get some green baby, I really want a smoke when Thomas goes to sleep, he's been running about playing and won't give me a minute to write my book."
"No problem baby I'll call Tony, be back in about twenty minutes" I replied.
Tay hung up, she'll get that book finished I thought to myself, she'd been writing short stories for a while, I knew she'd get published, her writing was good.
I flicked through my contacts on my mobile down to Tony's number and hit call, Tony picked up almost immediately.
"Hello John" he said "what do you need mate."
"Hello Tony" I replied " couldn't sort us a quarter of your finest could you, the misses is being beaten up by the little man so she needs a smoke mate."
"No worries" Tony said "where you at."
"I'll be on the corner of my street mate near the church" I replied.
"Give me ten minutes" Tony said.
I got to the corner of my street and lit a cigarette and leaned against the stone wall of the church waiting for Tony.
This is crazy I thought to myself, I just killed her and now I'm spending her money, that was easy, nothing like the first time, I wasn't shaking, no sick feeling in my stomach, in fact I felt nothing for what I had just done except happiness and exhilaration.
Tony arrived in his van, we made some small talk then he gave me the weed, I gave him the money and we parted ways.
I headed down my street toward my home, happy that I was going to have a smoke with my lady.
