I got back to my house, hung my coat up and put my gloves back in my backpack in the closet under the stairs.
Tay had already put our little man to bed and after a few minutes of rolling we both went into the backyard for a smoke, this is a good, a good night I thought to myself, confident that no one had seen me with the old woman and no one could connect me.
The rest of the night passed quickly and after we'd checked on Thomas we both headed to bed.
It was about six in the morning when my alarm woke me, I hate early starts I thought as I got out of bed, Tay was still sleeping, I kissed her on the cheek and went and got ready for work then popped my head into our little mans room to check on him, he was sleeping soundly, I kissed him on the forehead and headed downstairs and out of the front door to work.
The day dragged on and on, never seeming to want to end, finally my shift done I headed for home.
When I arrived I saw Tay stood on the front doorstep talking to a police officer, oh shit I thought to myself as I approached them.
"Hello love, what's up" I said trying to not sound worried at the sight of the police officer.
"An old lady was attacked last night a few streets away from here, it's terrible" Tay said.
"That is terrible" I replied.
"The officer was just asking if we'd seen anyone in the neighbourhood or heard anything about it" Tay said.
The officer looked at me, you don't know anything, be cool, it's ok he hasn't got a clue I thought to myself.
"Well if we do we'll be sure to call" I said to the officer.
He gave me his card and thanked us both for our time and wandered off down the front garden path and turned down the street and headed to the house next door.
I headed inside our house and Tay followed closing the front door behind her.
"Where's little man" I said hoping Tay would not ask anything about me being out the previous night.
"He's having a nap, the lady at his daycare said he was being quiet today so when I got back I gave him some medicine and put him in his crib, he's got an appointment at his doctors tomorrow cause he had a slight temperature."
"Argh bless him, he seems to pick up anything that's going about so easily" I replied.
I went to head up stairs to change pausing only to kiss Tay, as I got to the top of the stairs Tay spoke, I turned and looked down to where she was stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Her long black hair was done up in a messy bun, black t-shirt and sweat pants on, she gave me a discerning look.
"John you didn't see anything last night when you we're out did you" she said.
Tay never called me John unless we we're having sex, my mind raced, I couldn't lie to her could I, I didn't want to, think, think, what to say I thought.
"Where did it happen love" I said.
"A few streets down on Pine road" Tay replied.
"I don't think I went down that way love" I replied.
"Ok baby, I'm going to cook cornflake chicken, will you check on Thomas" Tay said and headed into the kitchen.
I checked on our little man who was sleeping and then headed into the bathroom to shower, did she know ?? Why did she call me John, my mind was working overtime, I undressed and then just stood staring at the mirror.
I wanted to kill again, I knew it, I wanted it but I didn't want my wife to know, I didn't want to hurt my family but the feelings stayed constant, the sensation, the power, knowing they we're helpless, I had all the control.
I moved from the mirror and got in the shower, the water was warm, slightly burning over my skin but it felt good, I closed my eyes and just listened to myself breathing, water running down my face.
I snapped to as Tay shouted from downstairs.
"You want sides with this chicken baby."
"Up to you my love" I replied.
The rest of the night passed by without incident or major conversation, I was glad, I knew Tay knew something or at least suspected but she didn't press me because if she had I think I would have told her, please god don't ever let her come straight out and ask me I thought.
The next morning was like the one before, another bloody early start, I left the house slightly late but the urge to find someone, a family was still there, I grabbed my backpack from under the stairs, today I thought to myself.
I put the backpack in the trunk of my car, a rusted dark grey sixty nine charger five hundred, one day I'll get the money to do you up I thought to myself.
Tay had been asking me to get rid of it and get a newer car for years but I couldn't part with it, it was my second baby after my family.
As I drove to work I found myself driving down roads I'd never been down, looking at house after house, wondering are you the one, then I spotted a beautiful looking one level house at the top of a dead end road.
"That's it" I said out loud to myself, I didn't know who lived there, I didn't care, the house in my mind had somehow picked me, this was it, my first planned killing, I would watch the house, watch whoever lived there, the trees backed on to the house so it was ideal.
I arrived at work late and took my bollocking, I didn't care, my mind was on the house, the people within, the thought of the kill.
The day passed slowly but my mind could never have been on my work.
My hunt had truly begun...
