Harriet was born and raised in slavery in 1822 in Maryland's Dorchester County. she had eight siblings called Mariah Ritty Ross, Moses Ross, Rachel Ross, Soph Ross, Linah Ross, Henry Ross, Ben Ross jr and Robert Ross.
Her parent's names are Harriet Greene Ross and Ben Ross. Her father was a slave but later took freedom but her mother had a life of slavery.
Her mother was nicknamed Rit. Rit was owned by Mary Pattison Brodess who later owned Harriet and her siblings.
Harriet's birth name was Araminta Ross. Her mother nicknamed her "Minty" then her friends and family started to call her "Minty" too.
Harriet and the slaves lived on a plantation in rural Maryland. at the age of 7, her sisters were sold.
At the age of five, she began to work as a house slave and later she was hired out to people. One Person was called Miss Susan who ordered her to take care of the baby and rock the cradle as it slept. If the baby woke up and cried Tubman would get whipped. On a particular day, Tubman was lashed 5 times before breakfast. Later she was put to the field.
As an adolescent, she suffered a severe head injury when an overseer threw a 2-pound metal weight at a slave that was planning to escape. The weight missed the person and hit Harriet and it broke her skull.
After her injury, she started to see visions and dreams from God. She acquired a strong faith in God. Tubman loved to hear bible stories told by her mother, but she rejected the New Testament teachings where slaves had to be obedient.
