I looked at it, confused with what it was. It was round and had a nice golden tint to it. It smelled like the ocean. It was covered with sand. As I wiped it off, I noticed that it had a symbol on it. It was a picture of a triangle. Inside that triangle was a human eye. What it meant, I had no idea. What it was used for, I had no idea either. I flipped it in between my fingers, like a magician getting ready for one of his tricks. It was smooth, yet rough at the same time. It was about the size of a half-dollar, but was pretty heavy. I tossed it in the air as if I was flipping a coin. It landed in my hand with a thud. Then out of nowhere, there was a sizzling sound coming from it. In a panic I tossed it on the bed. It started glowing with a bright blue light. I did not know what was going on but I knew it wasn't good. I took the object, which was burning in my hands, and ran to my balcony and threw it off. I watched it hit the ground a good fifty meters away, so what happened next was unexplainable. As I turned around a started to make my way to the door, I noticed something in the corner of the room. I ran right to it and became speechless. Holding in my hands was the exact same object I had thrown out the window not even thirty seconds ago. I didn't know what to with it, so I just put it in my pocket and went downstairs. I am no actor, so trying to act normal with a magical whatever-you-want-to-call-it in my pocket was not easy. I sat down and started to watch TV when my aunt came in.
“Hey bud, How you feeling?” The words stung. If there was one thing I hated the most, it was people asking me if I was okay. I played it safe and just blew off the question.
“Whats for dinner tonight?” I decided that the best way to act natural about the glowing blue ball of all magical powers in my pocket was to just not bring it up. What my aunt doesn't know will not hurt her. She looked at me and sighed, as if she was sad I did not want to talk about my emotions with her.
“Meatballs honey. Spaghetti and meatballs.” She started to walk away and I went back to the TV screen. Before she left she turned back around, “Alex I know its been hard on you these last couple of days, but the worst thing for you is just to stay there all balled up inside yourself. You need to talk to people, how you feel, whats going through your mind and all. That's why I signed you up for a counselor. I think it will be good for you, talking to him about your feelings and such. You have your first meeting tomorrow, I'll call you when dinners ready.” And with that I was left with my shows, though I had suddenly lost all interest in them. Instead I was doing some hardcore thinking. A counselor? So my aunt is taking me to see a therapist because I don't talk. I talk. I talk to Kelsie...and myself apparently...but there is no need for a therapist. I'm perfectly fine. Except for the golden globe of weirdness in my pocket, but there is no way I can explain that to some dude I barley know. In fact, there is no way I could explain it to Kelsie, or myself. Let's just push that thing out of my life. Or should I show her? She's already pretty freaked out about these men coming to get us, I don't think she needs anything else on her plate right now. Neither do I, but sometimes, even if it taste bad, you have to swallow the food and go back for more.
Ending on that thought I told my aunt I was going out and would be back by 7:32 and left the apartment. It had been a good two days since I had gone anywhere outside our home. Now, I'm not going outside, lets not get carried away now. I was simply going up stairs to visit the one person I do talk to. I knocked on the door and her mother let me in.
“She's in her room if your looking for her. Or did you simply come her to see me Alex?” She gave me a warm smile and laughed.
“Thanks, but no thanks Mrs. B, but I'm here for Kelsie this time, maybe next time we can sit down and talk.” I gave her a hug and went upstairs. If I could have a new mom, it would be her. It seems like she is always there for me. I made it down the hall and knocked on the door.
“Hold on mom.”
“Its Alex.” I heard things slam shut and falling off of counters. Then she opened the door and invited me in. She sat down on the bed, while I preferred the roller chair at the end of it. She sat there for a while looking down at her hands, and I looked at her. The way her hair hung over her shoulders, she rarely had it down, but I like it better like that. Finally I spoke, “My aunts taking me to see a therapist tomorrow. She says I don't talk to people about how I feel.”
“That's pretty rough,” her voice was soft and scared, “But that isn't why you came here is it.” It was not a question, it was a statement. Growing up, I could never hide anything from her, but she can easily hide things from me.
“No its not.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out the golden object. “I found this under the letter.” I tossed it to her and she caught it. She looked at it for a while, flipping it and examining it like Sherlock Holmes.
“Great, another unexplainable object that does who knows what, and is used for who cares.” She had a hint of anger in her voice. “What does it do? Let me guess it floats in the air spitting out words of prophecies?” As sarcastic as she sounded, it was sad because after the past could days and the events following them, I would not be surprised if that suddenly happened.
“No even better, it glows blue, gets really hot and...” I paused for dramatic effect, “watch this.” I took her to the balcony and we stood there. I wound up and let it rip. It flew through the air like a paper airplane, hit the ground with a solid clink. I looked over and her expression was equivalent to one if I had just thrown away a million dollars. “Wait it gets better.” I told her and led her back into the room. Sure enough, there on the dresser was my little mystery toy. She picked it up in amazement.
“How did you do that?” The expression was priceless. It was like she walked into her surprise birthday party and it was not even her birthday.
“Well you know, I've been taking classes with David Copperfield.”
“No seriously how did that just happen?” I took the object out of her hand and started explaining as best as I could, which was not much. I told her about finding it, and all that has happened up to here. Then I noticed a new pattern that was not there before. It seemed to be a pattern of interlocking branches, kind of like a braid. I began tracing the pattern with my finger. It went all they way around the outside of it. When suddenly, it began to glow again, not hot this time, but still glowing. I set it down on the dresser and watched. Then the unexpected happened.
I turned to Kelsie and just said, “Hmm. That's new.”
