"Cream or sugar?" He asks.
"Sugar please," I answer.
So far, none of the other doctors have barged in, expecting to see nothing but their own and instead to see a scrawny 147 pound boy whose only defense is sarcasm.
"Stop looking around, Stiles," Derek tries to reassure me, "No one will catch us."
He hands me a cup of coffee and sits down at a small table. I sit down next to him and he takes a sip of the coffee but then winces.
"Too hot? Or is that just me?" I flirt pathetically.
He scoffs. "Right.." he adds.
I sip my coffee and smile at him. "So Dr. Gorgeous, why do you look so young?"
His eyes widen at the Dr. Gorgeous part and he looks at me in disbelief.
"It's my first year here. I graduated at Beacon Hills University just last May and they put me in high ranks due to my stellar achievements and recommendations."
I nod. "Impressive,"
"Yeah? What are you gonna be?" He asks.
I shrug. "I don't really know. I wanna help people, sure, but I mean, most people just ignore me so I don't know how that'd be of any use."
He swallows. "Well I'm not ignoring you, am I?"
I smile. "Why is that?"
"You know what, Stiles.. I have no idea. I could have just silenced you out the moment you flirted with me when you woke up, but I guess I just felt too sorry for you."
I look down. "I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me. It was all my fault. My best friend died in my car because I was the one who gave him the keys. None of this would have happened without me."
He holds my arm sympathetically and I look up at him, whose face is nearly inching toward mine.
"It isn't your fault, Stiles."
I nod as if I believe him, but I really don't. Everything is my fault.
We are interrupted by a nurse stepping in the room. Derek immediately moved his hand from my arm to his cup.
"Hey Hale," she says, "another intern?"
"Yeah, this is Stiles. He's my brightest intern. Gonna be a great doctor someday."
I smile over at him. Maybe that's what I want. Maybe I want to be a doctor, just like him.
She leaves and Derek looks at me. "God that was close."
I laugh. "You really think I'm cut out for the whole doctor thing?"
"With help, maybe someday."
"Well then help me."
"Okay."
