Rachel's POV:
I arrive at the studio at 7:47am, just in time to cover Jenna's 8-5 shift. I was originally scheduled to come in at 1:30pm and stay til 7:00pm, but I dont mind the extra hours. Plus Eden is my best friend, I wouldnt leave her hanging. Especially since i know how painful and dibilitating a migraine can be. Poor thing. I take a mental note to text and check up on Jenna, make sure she doesnt need anything.
My shift starts off like it always does; putting on the communal pot of coffee, sanitizing mics and restocking each recording and board room's mini fridge with various snacks and beverages. I've been working here every summer for the past three years and have a basic routine down pat. Usually the work load is a bit more strenuous and entails more than just stocking fridges and cleaning recording equipment, but I'm not complaining. Although some aspects of this job aren't glamorous, I enjoy every minute of my time here.
I glance over at the impressive electric guitar wall display when I spot Jenna's dad going over todays schedule with his new assistant. We eventually make eye contact and I give him a friendly smile. Mr. Jared Johnson. Father of my childhood best friend, manager of Starlight Studios - California, and brother of Mike Johnson - founder and owner of Starlight Productions.
Everybody around here knows him as "Jer', "Jared" or even "Jarry the Cable Guy" since he's pretty tech savvy. Not gonna lie, I cringe everytime someone calls him that. Personally I can only see him as Mr. Johnson.
Mr. Johnson approaches me with quite the exasperated expression on his face. "Hey, kid! Wasnt expecting to see you this early! What a pleasant surprise. I've been here since about seven. Where's Jen?" he asks, pulling me into a side hug. "She's back home with a nasty migraine. I'm covering for her. Speaking of, what's on the agenda for today?" I ask quizically. "well lets see..." he replies as he looks over his clipboard. "We've got a board meeting at eleven, a few writing sessions between twelve and four thirty, as well as at least two back to back live studio recording sessions starting at three, which should last a few hours. And from there out its just meetings, meetings, meetings. Speaking of, have you restocked the snack bars?" "I'm still working on it." I reply as i glance down at my smart watch.
"Say, whos lined up for the recording sessions this afternoon? Could I maybe sit in and observe Mark at the mixing board?" I ask sheepishly. The world of music is fascinating to me, and thoroughly enjoy the process of making it. But I hardly ever get to sit in during sessions so it couldn't hurt to ask, even if i am half expecting Mr. Johnson to say no. "I believe Harry and his band are coming in for a writing+recording session, so they may take up the entire west wing of the second floor. They're scheduled to show up in a couple of hours, actually. sometime between ten and twelve." He states, finally looking up from his clipboard. "Harry... are you talking about Harry Styles?" I ask with a slightly confused expression, trying to mask my sudden excitement.
I mean I wouldn't consider myself to be a Harry Styles stan, but I do enjoy some of One Direction's music. Harry's vocals are insane; I would kill to have his range. And I admire his musical flexibility. I hear that he's pretty friendly too. They all are, as far as I know.
"I dont know, Rachel. We're kind of short staffed today and there's quite a bit of preparation left to be done before clients arrive..." Mr. Johnson replies as he studies his clipboard once again. I give an exaggerated sigh by a subtle roll of my eyes, hoping to display playful disappointment.
"Pleaseee? It looks like a pretty slow morning as far as clientele is concerned. I can spend the next couple of hours doing nothing but prep work. I'll even print out and file the meeting material in advance so we have one less thing to worry about. And when I sit in I'll just hang around in the shadows in case they need anything."
