“Are you still awake?” His voice as deep as a giant’s in a cave.
Her eyes flicker open to the bright, warm light of the fireplace burning. She looks around the room to see the man standing in the doorway.
“Not precisely. Just…” She pauses for a second, “…Everything is just confusing right now. I keep dreaming of tomorrow and how it will play out. I know you’ve told me many times, but”
He walks over and sits next to her as he cuts her off, “Honey, you can be worried if you want, but your mother, sister, and you are my life and for as long as I am your father, I will let nothing happen to you.” He brushes the hair out of her eyes.
She sits up and begins to stare at the fire burning. Neither of them says a word for a few moments till her father speaks.
“Would you like me to tell you a story?” He explains, “Technically, it’s a song, but I figure you would like to know the back story.”
“It’s not something you made up, is it?” she questions him.
He gets up and walks over to the bookshelf. He pulls down a very old looking style book and walks back over to sit down.
“Actually, no it’s not.” He says matter-of-factly, “See the author’s name? That was one of your ancestors. He actually wrote a song, but wrote this whole book to explain why he wrote the song.”
She curls up next to her father with the warmth of the fire to her back. He looks down at her to see her smile. She is only 12. I can’t believe what they put her through. He pushed that thought to the back of his mind. He opened the book and started reading.
