It was a lazy Sunday morning. The sky was painted deep blue with occasional patches of white clouds spreading across. Birds chirped happily as a misty breeze blew, creating a peaceful environment throughout the town.

But the Sharma household was anything but peaceful that morning. The elder daughter, Bela, was furious with her parents and refused to listen to a word they said.

Bela, my bacha, just listen to me once” Manish pleaded.

I said I don’t want to hear anything! You two always do what you want and expect me to stay silent. That’s never going to happen!” Bela retorted angrily.

Bela, just listen to papa once” Sarika urged.

You listen to me! I won’t marry someone I don’t even know. How could you two arrange my marriage without asking me?” Bela demanded.

Bela, behave. Don’t forget we are your parents” Manish said firmly.

Sorry, papa, but I will not marry him, no matter what” Bela declared.

You have to do this. This is my final decision” Manish said, walking away, leaving Sarika and a distraught Bela in the living room.

Sarika tried to console her daughter “Bela, my baby, listen to your papa. Whatever he’s doing, it’s for your own good.”

How is this for my good, mamma? I don’t know him at all. You both should have at least asked me once, but no, you both just imposed your decision on me” Bela countered.

Don’t you trust your mamma-papa ? Why don’t you meet him once and get to know him?” Sarika suggested.

And what good will that do? Will my mind change after meeting him? Will I agree to the marriage then? I’m telling you again, I won’t marry him,” Bela asserted and stormed back to her room.

Sarika sighed, “ Uff this girl just won’t understand.”

Out of nowhere, Minnie, the younger daughter of the house, appeared in the hall. “Mamma, you know right Di takes time to understand things. But don't worry when your smart daughter is here. I’ll convince her, so chill.”

Sarika smiled, “Just make sure you explain everything.”

“Yes, mamma” Minnie assured her.

Later that day, Minnie entered Bela’s room. Bela loved spending most of her time alone in her room and had restricted everyone from entering, but Minnie occasionally made exceptions as they were best friends who shared every thing with each other be it their secrets.

“Di, listen, I need your help,” Minnie said.

Nobody is here to help me, and you want my help?” Bela replied.

What happened, Di? Did something happen?” Minnie asked innocently.

Don’t act like you know nothing,” Bela snapped.

Tell me, maybe I can help you with something,” Minnie insisted.

“You know mamma-papa have fixed my marriage without even asking me.” Bela complained.

Oh, that’s the matter. Di, I think you should marry the guy whom mamma-papa has chosen for you.” Minnie said nonchalantly.

Really? You’re telling me this? You know I love...” Bela started.
