I sat in the booth, nervously tracing the rim of my mug as I waited.
The café was warm, filled with soft chatter and the comforting scent of coffee and pastries, but none of it seemed to settle the tension sitting in my chest.
Jasper Monroe.
Even the name felt... distant.
Untouchable.
I'd spent hours researching him the night before.
Nothing.
Well—not nothing.
There was plenty about Monroe Enterprises. The biggest media company in the United States. Powerful. Influential. Untouchable in its own way.
But him?
Nothing.
No interviews. No photos. No public appearances.
Just whispers.
A recluse.
Doesn't socialise.
Doesn't leave his estate.
It was strange.
Unsettling, even.
Who builds an empire like that and then just... disappears?
I took a sip of my hot chocolate, letting the warmth settle me slightly. Outside, autumn had fully taken hold—the cold air biting, leaves scattered across the pavement, people rushing past with scarves wrapped tightly around their necks.
Normal life.
Something I was trying to get back to.
I glanced at the door just as it opened.
And then I knew.
She had to be Lilly.
Elegant.
Composed.
Dressed perfectly without looking like she'd tried too hard.
She walked toward me with purpose, her presence calm but commanding in a way that made people naturally move out of her path.
"Hi," she said warmly. "You must be Miss Dover? I'm Lilly."
I shot up from my seat a little too quickly—
And immediately knocked my hot chocolate straight onto the table.
"Oh my God—" I gasped, grabbing napkins in a panic. "I'm so sorry, I—"
Clumsy.
Of course.
Perfect first impression.
Lilly didn't even flinch.
She simply stepped in, helping me clean it up like it wasn't a big deal at all.
