Her hair looked so soft, her smile so perfect. I wanted her eyes on me all day everyday. But instead, just like everyone else in class she was gazing at Haze.
He was everything anyone ever wanted, and for what? So what if he had perfect grades and dreamy eyes. Why couldn't everyone look at me like that? I knew it was over rated to want to be the top and probably bad for my health to want to change myself so badly, and I had good qualities too. Whenever we had a project I always gave it my all, I'm creative and I've seen his outcomes, nothing special.
"Go sit with your partners now." Mr Gretch sits down at his desk and takes out his phone. Great, unsupervised and the whole class to spend admiring Lolas beauty.
"Don't fuck this up for us." Haze sits down in the chair beside me and opens his book. He smelt of cologne and it made me clench my fists. Why did he had to take the extra step, he was already so perfect. His eyes lazily trail the sheet infront of him as he highlighted. This wasn't the first time we were partners. Our last names were close together on the list and I guess Mr Gretch doesn't care to be creative with the partners.
"Please, try not to take over and make it into a hot mess as always." I smile at him, his eyes looking up at me with his head still down. He seemed annoyed and I felt accomplished.
"Don't worry, that's your specialty." He winks, both of us jump at the bell and make our way out of class. We weren't friends, but we have done so much homework together that it became a sort of ritual to get an after school snack while we go over the project.
I grabbed my stuff from my locker and make my way to the doors. Just my luck, Lola was walking toward the exit too. Her long locks of hair swing as she giggles along to something her friend said. Both of them peak back at me an the giggling continues. Anxiety shoots through my chest and I begin walking slower, expanding the gap between us.
"Girls are confusing." I feel a hand plop down on my head before resting on my shoulder. "Don't overthink it, you have your whole life ahead of you. Lola isn't the universe." His hand squeezes tightly, it felt as if all of the tense within me was let go.
Haze wasn't so bad, in fact I'm sure he's a good friend to some. Having a rival as a friend, tho, was never positive. I wanted Lola, I had to learn his tricks, not keep him close and potentially give Lola a chance with him instead of me. Avoid friendship at all cost, no matter how nice he may pretend to be.
"But I want her." I mumble to myself, eyes hitting the ground. "She deserves to be treated like a princess."
"See that's your first problem." He pauses while we get into his car. "Girls want what they can't have. You seriously got to let it go, she's just going to hurt you. You're talented, you're going places." His hand moves around the wheel as he drives and I glare at the veins on his arms and hands. Why was he so perfect, it wasn't fair, I never had a chance with Lola while he's around.
"Whatever." I mumble and look out the window, he lets out a deep groan and a smirk forms on my face. I love when he got annoyed with me. Something about him not getting everything he wanted was thrilling. At school he was treated like some sort of god, it's sickening.
"You're stubborn." He jerks the car a little, making my eyes go wide and look forward. He parked infront of a restaurant and was already getting out. I rush to catch up to him and look at the people already seated inside.
"Breakfast, at 4?" I mumble, sitting down in a booth across from him.
"You stress about a lot."
"I'm not stressed, I'm observant." I narrow my eyes at him for the second time today. He slowly smirks, pushing the menu closer to me.
"Be observant and choose something to eat." His voice was a little more harsh and I found my stomach begin to heat up. I was hungry, I needed to eat.
"Welcome to Denny's!" A waitress stands infront of our table and smiles down looking back and forth between us.
"Thanks! It's our anniversary!" Haze smiles up at her, leaving my mouth agape. Is he serious?
"That's so sweet! I love seeing couples celebrating it's the sweetest thing." Her eyes soften as she looks at me. I didn't want to be embarrassed, so I kept my mouth closed and waited as she excused herself. Haze climbs out of the booth and over to my side, opening his backpack and pulling out the assignment sheet.
"Why did you lie?" I look away from him and try to distract myself. He purposely put more attention on us than he had to, and for what?
"I didn't lie, technically we met this time last year." He likes my leg and I turn to look at him. His eyes were big and he seemed hopeful. "Besides, if you're celebrating you get a free shake." He smiles and as if on que our waitress puts a shake down on our table with two straws.
"Congratulations you two!" She smiles wide at us while we order our food. A classic breakfast with eggs and hash browns at 4pm on a Friday.
I let him drink most of the shake, our ideas flowing smoothly on paper as we get ahead start on the project. It was going pretty well, I wasn't as annoyed by him when he wasn't being swooned over by all of the girls in our class.
After we finished eating, we packed up and he drove us back to the residence by the college. The whole way home we giggled about how happy the waitress seemed for us.
We grab our stuff and head inside to our room.
Did I mention were roommates? I guess keeping your enemy close isn't such a bad thing.
