The grass beneath my feet as I run, laughing and giggling as I pass the flowers— roses and daffodils followed by the orchids. The rays of the sun beating down on my skin, the feeling bringing a smile to my face.
My eyes catch a strand of her wispy brown hair as I turn my head around to see if she was catching up.
She was always fast.
I keep running, my ears becoming accustomed to the melody of her sweet giggles and laughs, a force knocks me over onto the green grass, just like I knew would happen.
We roll around, our laughs filling the silence, i flip her over on her back and pin her arms to the side of her head, a lazy grin on her face and her eyes twinkling with the childlike innocence.
I tickle the sides of her small body and she erupts in more laughter, squirming— trying to get out of my grasp.
"D-dom stop" she says out of breath, unable to control her laughs as she speaks.
"Say please" I say back to her as I ease off on my movements—still perched on top of her waist, straddling her.
"Plea—" she begins before being cut off as a shoe is thrown our way— hitting the back of my head, making me wince.
"Oi! What are you kids doing! No funny business in my backyard" a voice says, the thick Italian accent seeping through, the voice which I instantly recognise as my nonna.
She's 4'11 but gosh she's scary when she's mad, her figure appears at the top of the back veranda— a sneer plastered on her face.
My heart drops and I get off Nica immediately, helping her up as she dusts of her white flower dress, blowing the strands of brown hair out of her face.
She gives me a confused look and I nudge her elbow before looking towards where my nonna was standing, her eyes widening and a smile on her lips as she runs towards her envoloping he run a hug which is reciprocated.
Huh?
"My sweet, sweet Nicolette, how are you my dear? You must visit more" she says while kissing Nicas head.
How?
"Hi nonna! I missed you!" Her sweet voice rings out
"Mio dio, we need to get some food in you stomach! Your all skin and bones!" My nonna says while feeling her sides and kissing her forehead, "hurry up my boy, and stop that funny business with the goo goo eyes!" She says as she snaps her fingers in my direction, Nicolette snickering behind her which I playfully roll my eyes at.
{translate- Italian; my god}
I lived with my nonna since I was a kid, my parents live back in Italy, they missed home and couldn't stand the united states, I begged them to let me stay here with nonna.
They still call and text but I miss them sometimes, last time I saw them was Christmas and it's already February!
I follow the laughs and the clinks of cutlery until I'm bought to our kitchen, Nicolette is sitting on top of the bench while nonna is cutting the watermelon next to her, both smiling and laughing.
