As soon as Elijah was out of view, pressure seemed to lift from the house. He took a sudden breath and turned to find that the living room was back to normal. At least, normal for his time.
Not wanting to be caught downstairs again, he returned to his room and laid his head down, feeling spent. His entire body was heavy, and he passed out immediately, sleeping through anything else for the rest of the night.
By the time he woke up, it was nearly noon the next day. Aaron rubbed his eyes groggily before recollecting the night's events and darting for his laptop.
No matter how many search engines he used, he could not find any results for an amateur paranormal investigator dying at the house anymore.
He did it! He saved Elijah! Which confirmed that not only was he really hopping back in time, but he could change events too!
Excitement bubbled up, overriding his previous exhaustion as he felt encouraged to continue investigating Caleb's disappearance. Elijah was easy since he knew exactly when, where and how he died, but Caleb was going to be a bit trickier.
Aaron knew he was getting a little ahead of himself, so he decided to pop his head out and see if any of his other 'housemates' were around. Spotting the oversized form of Trevor, he meekly poked him on the shoulder. "Hey! Morning!"
"Morning." Trevor nodded, then crinkled his nose.
"You still smell something funky?"
"You don't?"
"Not really. Oh hey, do know where Elijah is?"
"Who?" The man asked, causing Aaron's smile to fade from his face.
He saved Elijah, didn't he? So that meant he should be back in the house, alive and well. Right?
"Never mind." He backed off, not wanting to risk getting into trouble for bringing up strange topics again. Trevor was the biggest chicken in the house, so he was the last person he'd want to scare.
Curious, he pulled up Elijah's old Ghost Encounters channel. Just because he didn't get crushed by a ceiling fan, didn't mean he couldn't have died a different way later. Luckily that wasn't the case as he found the channel still active, and even more popular than his own.
A small twinge of jealously had Aaron biting his lip, but he brushed it off, knowing this was much better than his friend's original tragic fate.
There were a ton more videos, and he quickly realized he had four years' worth of content to catch up on.
Excited over the change, he looked up a wiki article for popular channels and learned that Elijah had leaped in popularity after filming two videos of shadow people, one of which was caught during a live event.
Unfortunately, the authorities found out about him breaking into the house and the bank put a restraining order on him, threatening to fine him if he was caught on the premises again. Thus he hadn't been anywhere near the house ever since, which would explain why he didn't live with them anymore.
He vaguely wondered if his friend would remember him, but doubted it since the timeline was changed. The only Aaron he knew now was the shadow that attacked him, and now that Elijah was saved, he was left to face a very serious possibility.
Aaron could be the only living person in the house.
Elijah's ghost hadn't given any hints about being dead. Everything seemed normal about him. Aaron had even jabbed him in the chest before and the guy felt solid enough. So if he couldn't tell that Elijah was dead back then, that meant he had no way to tell if the others were dead either.
