Kenma tried out. He even made it to the final tryout, something he didn't think he would be able to do, but he did.

Unfortunately, he didn't make the final cut.

Well, this sucked. He felt as if they had strung him along, making him think he'll make the team, just to cut him off at the last possible second.

He didn't want to try out, so why did he feel so shitty about not making it?

The truth was, he secretly, deep down, wanted to make it.

He sat alone, feeling sorry for himself in an empty classroom, waiting for Y/n. She usually sat with her friends at lunch, and him with his. But today he needed some comfort, so he texted her to come up there. This had never happened before, so she knew something must've been wrong.

Walking into the classroom, the y/h girl immediately locked eyes with her friend. "K-Kenma? Is everything alright?" She walked across the room to where he was sitting, pulling out a chair and sitting down herself.

"I, I didn't make the team."

"Oh! That's... that's okay! That's fine! They just lost the best setter they could've had."

Kenma ignored this. "I just feel like, like I wasn't enough, you know?" he said while tears formed in his eyes, blurring his vision slightly. "Ugh, you must think I'm so lame, crying in front of you like this. I'll... I'll go."

"No, don't," she grabbed his arm, holding him in place. "You can cry, I won't look."

"Can you... can you hold me? Please?"

"Then I'll close my eyes."

Wrapping her arms around him, Y/n closed her eyes as promised. She listened to her friend's worries and sorrows, his tears staining her uniform shirt.

"It just makes me think 'what could I have done better?'"

"Nothing, Kenma. You did your best. You were perfect. You are perfect."

"Again," he said with a shaky voice. "Say it again. Please."

"I'll say it as many times as you need me to, Kenma."

"You're perfect."

"Again."

And this continued. When the bell rang, she held his face in her hands, now puffy from all the crying. Eyes still closed she said "You'll be okay, okay? We can get ice cream after school. How does that sound?"

He nodded, liking the idea.

That was the moment he realized he was in love with his best friend.
