This chapter is inspired by the song "Jenny" by Studio Killers. I've included the link to play the song in the header.
Like our usual late evening talks, Hermione and I laid side-by-side on her bed, both our arms tucked under our heads as we stared at the curtains above us. We had been laying here for quite some time as we talked about the upcoming O.W.L.'s and end-of-the-year activities. The students of Gryffindor had planned for a Hogsmeade trip before the end of the year, in hopes of regaining some happiness and strengthening bonds that had weakened during Umbridge's tyranny.
"Hey, Mione." My voice came out hesitant with a hint of tiredness from the battle we had fought at the Department of Mysteries.
"What's up, Y/N?"
I sighed loudly before moving to prop myself up on one elbow, my body turned to face her. Noticing the shift in my mood, Hermione did likewise so that we both faced each other.
"I wanted to tell you something—at least before the school year ends."
"Go on," Hermione encouraged with a nod.
"Um... so you're my best friend." I shifted my eyes to stare directly at her, letting her know that I was being serious. "And I tell you everything. But... there's a few things I haven't told you—a few things you don't know of."
Hermione tilted her head in confusion, but her attention remained the same.
"I don't know if you've noticed, but I borrow your lipstick often, even if I have my own. And I use your shirt as a pillowcase because it's 'softer' than the ones they provide for us."
"Y/N, where are you going with this?"
"I just... I need to tell you something." I spoke timidly, my voice shaking with anxiety.
Hermione took my hand gently, but I yanked my own away. She stared with a more serious expression.
"It's okay, Y/N. Just tell me."
I paused for a moment, weighing in the pros and cons of what would happen. Perhaps it would be better to keep it to myself. No, I couldn't. I can't keep this secret much longer.
And finally, I mustered enough confidence to admit it to her. "Hermione... I want to ruin our friendship."
"What do you mean?"
"We should be lovers instead," I blurted. "I don't know how else to say this, Mione. I didn't want to ruin anything because you truly are my dearest friend."
"Y/N... I—"
"No," I interrupted. "Please... let me get this off my chest first."
Hermione nodded, her expression unreadable.
"I've been doing terrible things, Hermione. Things you don't know about. I've been stealing your stuff every so often. I don't do it because I'm a thief. I do it to things you won't miss, only because having something of yours means the world to me. And... I've never liked anyone you've shown interest in, Viktor Krum especially."
Gosh she's going to hate me for this, but her face is something I hoped I wouldn't see. But I'm desperate for any other reaction.
"Please, Hermione. I can't pretend anymore. Forget anyone you've ever liked—your love for them won't last long. I do believe that we're more than friends. I believe there's something more. Take my hand, Hermione. I know this is cheesy, but I'll follow you until the end, however long you'll let me."
I finally finished with a racing heart, drawing back from the now-uncomfortable proximity. To my surprise, Hermione's expression lightened, and the corners of her lips turned slightly upwards. Could it be?
"Y/N... I have to something to admit as well."
