Shopping Trip

Needless to say, Cas was a bit exhausted.
He pushed the cart slowly, taking his time with the way he interacted with the world around him.

Jack, however, was filled with his usual playful and eager energy.
Cas tiredly admired the happy young boy, who was sitting cross legged in the shopping cart, studying a box of sugary cereal Cas had set in the cart.

4 years old and already the kid had picked up Dean's habit of eating food that had absolutely no nutritional value, Cas thought to himself.
Despite his objections he enjoyed seeing the gap toothed grin it put on his boy's childish face.
Cas recalled his mental grocery list, and
steered the cart into the bread aisle.
The vast variety of bread often seemed overwhelming, when shopping, so he just picked out the kind they had at home.
It's Just simple bread, why did it have to be so complicated? He thought with a huff.
Jack acknowledged the world around him once again, looking up and watching his dad, as a loaf of bread was being handed to him.
Jack cheerfully fulfilled his duties of being his dad's helper, taking the bread and setting it into the cart, as he grinned triumphantly.

Next, Cas guided the cart into the aisle where the pasta was located.
He pondered at the spaghetti noodles for a moment before taking a box off the shelf.
I think this is the kind Dean told me to get..? He grimaced, hoping it was the right brand. He handed it to Jack.
The boy's eyes filled with joy.
"SCABETTIESS!" He cheered, holding the noodles in the air above his head doing a happy little wiggle.
"Jack- don't squish the bread!" Cas groaned.
Jack contently set the box of noodles into the cart.
Cas pursed his lips at the slightly crushed bread beside his son. He sighed with a smile.

Just then his cellphone rang. He scrambled to reach it from his pocket and pick up.
"Hello Dean", Cas answered.
Jack's eyes gleamed.
"HI DAD!!!" He interrupted with a squeal.
Cas held the phone between his ear and shoulder so he could continue pushing the cart with both hands.
If anyone in the store had to describe him at that moment, they would definitely say that cas looked like a very busy father.

"Yes, Jack's being good." Cas stated.
The young boy smiled at that.

"Yes, I got the bread, Dean", Cas replied.

"Wait, I thought I had just bought eggs last week." He was quiet for a moment, as he listened to Dean over the phone.

"You did what??" Cas's eyebrows furrowed as he sighed.
"Dean, Jack is too young to be playing with firecrackers, I don't care if you lit them with him. He could explode a finger. " Cas grumbled with exhaustion, and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"I don't buy groceries so that you can explode them with our kid." He nagged.
Jack snickered mischievously and Cas gave him a warning glare.
"Okay Dean, no I'm not mad, just don't do stupid things. Fine, but you're doing the dishes. You too, bye Dean." Cas hung up and sighed, running a hand through his messed hair.

With a grudge, he retrieved eggs to put in the cart.
"Ooh yay!! Boom booms!" Jack cheered.
Cas growled under his breath, and hesitantly put a second carton of eggs into the cart, knowing that Dean would probably be destroying more eggs with Jack, and Cas wasn't gonna be baking eggless cookies anytime soon.

Along with the eggs, Cas ended up getting crackers, juice, honey, and bacon.

Eventually the tired man made his way past the bakery, instinctively taking one of the fresh apple pies that sat at the display shelf.
He handed it to his son, doing so without a thought.

Cas was sure he had everything they needed, and guided the groceries and his honey haired kid along with.

There was only one person in line, and Cas and his son waited.
Jack reached over the cart, his dinosaur covered sleeve reaching for a chocolate bar on the stand by the register.
"Jack- put that back" Cas said gruffly.

"But daddddd, I like nougat!", The youngster pleaded.
Cas closed his eyes and huffed.
"Fine, Jack" Cas gave in.
Because if it made Jack smile, it was worth it.
Jack giggled with delight.
"You're not eating that before dinner though." Cas told him.

It was their turn to pay for their items, and Jack helped place the groceries on the conveyer belt at the counter.

The cashier smiled at the two.
"Oh, look at you, such a beautiful boy! Is he yours?" The cashier asked, while oggling over Jack.

Cas smiled, "yeah, he's always trying to impress me, and be a helper" he chatted as jack tried to gently hand the cashier the eggs.

"Gee, he certainly looks just like you." The woman remarked.

The man gleemed at that, feeling bashful.
"Well, he does have my features, but he seems to mirror his Dad's behavior more. He does get pretty mischievous", Cas hummed raising his eyebrows.

The cashier finished bagging and rounding up their things.
Cas helped his son out of the cart, along with the bags.
"I want to help!" Jack hopped up and down grabbing at one of the bags.
Cas handed the young bewildered boy the lightest bag, Jack happily clutched it between his arm and body.

They exited the grocery store.
Jack held his father's hand as they crossed the parking lot to the Impala together.
After he loaded the groceries into the trunk, Cas helped Jack buckle into his car seat.
The boy happily patted his knees with a smile, happy to be on their way home.

And Cas was happy to settle into the seat of the deeply loved car, and drive home to eat dinner together with his family.

--Author's Note--
Thank you so dang much for reading this!!! It's my first serious fanfiction chapter, and I worked hard.
And while it's just kind of a scene, sort of making it a oneshot, it will be kind of continuous throughout the other chapters,
I would love to hear any feedback in the comments, and please look forward to reading more!
