The clock struck three and the detectives were working to the best of their ability, trying to find the culprit. As they searched houses, restaurants, underneath bridges and alleyway, Margaret decided to follow the direction which the cloaked figure was running off to. She recalled her steps going, stopping at the place where she was disturbed. She scanned the area and decided that it was time for a bit of magic. With her knowledge of spells and years of training witchcraft and combat, she decided it was time for her to use the only potion she had.
She called out a raven, the most loyal one out of all and asked it to scan the area while she used a forbidden spell to investigate the past. If anyone sensed the spell being used, the raven would come down and peck her on the head, allowing her to gain consciousness and stop the spell from leaving a trail. A lot of witches had used this spell, but due to the danger it puts to the mind, it was considered never to be used and never to be seen again. However, if it were to be used by a witch, it would be considered as treason and execution to be followed after trial.
She pulled out some chalk and started drawing symbols all around her. Next, she pulled out a spell book and recited the words on the page which she turned to. The sigils around her started to glow a very eerie color. Unlike other spells, this one was a very strange and long process. Of course, it had its side effects, but non-like other. The effects would depend on how long you've been in the past. It could be nausea, transformation, etc. The effects could also last either a few minutes or a week!
The color didn't last long, as the eerie glow started to fade from the sigils. Margaret knew she was in the past and that she only had limited time before anyone in the present time noticed about her crime. She had had a few close calls, but she always had her trustful and loyal raven. That bird had always come to the rescue when she needed it, but she knew what the real reason for all those rescues were for. The poor raven that was once a man, would never get to walk on his own two legs again. They made a deal in the beginning, when he was man with a lot of debt. He came to her to make a deal. A deal that would allow the people to forget about him and his debts that was overdue. However, even this spell had its own pay and unfortunately the man couldn't pay in money. So, the witch gave him another choice for payment, that he would become her eyes when she needed them, her slave when the time came for him to be one and her alarm for when danger was nearby.
He reluctantly agreed and once the spell was in him, he immediately transformed into a raven. Ever since then, the deal was supposed to last for about 13 years, but after the man lost his identity, family and home, he decided to spend the rest of his life with a purpose... and that was to serve Margaret. She wasn't that bad. She enjoyed his company. She might've not shown it, but it was there. He could sense it. And Margaret knew it.
Margaret moved and followed the dark figure, copying their every move. She had been in this past for the last five minutes. The effects would start soon, and she was not planning on not showing up to work. She followed the dark figure in the alleyway only to reveal a dead end. The figure turned around and Margaret felt it. It was as if the figure could see her in the past, their eyes digging into her soul, watching her menacingly, waiting for her to make her a move. That was when she was brought back to the present time. It all just happened in a flash, and she found the raven on her shoulder. She nodded towards the raven's direction, thanking him silently. She wiped the sigils quickly, making sure no magic trail was left behind, nor that chalk marks that were made during her escape of the present time were left behind. When she finished cleaning up, Luna came from around the corner. Smiling. This made Margaret worry, but Luna simply lifted a bag with something inside it. Evidence, Margaret knew. It was evidence. The evidence in which she needed to solve this case. This was it, she thought. This was where it ended.
Culprit's POV:
I sensed it. They were using that forbidden spell. I knew when I was running away in the alleyway, I felt this strange presence behind me. Everything else didn't make sense until I finally read the book about forbidden spells. Where you could feel the presence of somebody watching you. It was the spell that could take you to the past. The problem was that the side effects were too dangerous and random. It could either make you die, or make you want to die. If I can get there to see who it is, I could get a reward for reporting any forbidden spells. In the air, I noticed a bird flying high. It made me wonder if it could see me or the person using the forbidden spell. I made a mental note to ask it later, while I investigate the source of magic. I hid behind the wall around the corner as the closer I got, the more magic I could feel. It had been 5 minutes when she was near, and she decided to hide behind the wall. When she was about to turn and confront the person, that sense of magic suddenly disappeared. I turned my head around the corner, only to find detective Margaret. Before I could become noticed, I turned and ran back to the bells so that I could carry out my next plan.
