I ran after her, because if I didn’t then I wouldn’t have anywhere else to go.

“Wait! Yvette!” I yelled. She turned around and smiled.

“Finally come to your senses?” she smirked. I pursed my lips and grabbed my bag.

“I’ll have to hold on to this thing a little tighter than I thought.” I said.

“Come, I’ll show you the ways of the London Underground.” I honestly had no idea what she meant. But she grabbed my wrist and dragged me over to what looked like a math problem with words.

“What?? Is this?” I asked with suspicion.

“It’s the Underground Map.” She said matter-of-factly. I started to mutter something, then she interrupted. I got a headache when I looked at it.  “See we’re here and home is over there,” She said, pointing to random places on the map. I wasn’t convinced, though. “to get home, we have to get on the tan-ish line, so we stop at Piccadilly Circus.” She continued. I kind of got it, but I wasn’t really sure.

“Do you get it, the slightest bit?” She asked.

“We’ll I’ve never had to do this before so…”

                                                                        “No?”

                                                                     “Exactly.”

“ Ok, we have to get here,” she said, pointing to a little line that said “Marylebone”.

“and we’re here. The only way out is the blue line. How do we get there?”

“I… dunno. Does the white thing mean a station?” I asked.

“YAY! Yes! A connecting station!” she explained excitedly. “Which station does it connect to?”

“Piccadilly Circus, the one you talked about earlier!” I said, now getting it.

“You, my friend have now learned to navigate your way through the Underground.” She said, grabbing my shoulder. She led me to the train, and we hopped on. For what seemed like forever, we stayed on that dang train until it got to Piccadilly Circus. We got off, then she made me figure out what to do.

“Really? Why can’t you use your magical navigation powers?” I said.  She laughed, and said, “Which way, Captain Wiley?”

I looked at the signs, and there were lists of names on them, and Marylebone was on only one of them.

“That way.” I said, pointing where the sign was. She clapped.

“Good job. You’re a fast learner.” Yvette said.

“Correction, I am an artist.” I told her. She smirked, and dragged me on the train. Then, after a few minutes we were at our stop. Then we walked into this appeared to be called “Pretz”

“SURPRISE!” a ton of people yelled. I could feel myself smile. I’d never been thrown a surprise party, and I was 18. I hadn’t even been thrown a party before. I started tearing up, and Yvette hugged me.

“Wiley, I want you to meet a few people.” She said, “This is Nikolla, but we call her Nikki, Damon, Marlee, Colby, and Hayden.”

“Hi, nice to meet you all.” I said politely.

“Nice to meet you too,”   Marlee said.

“I’ve heard a lot about you from Yvette, and I’m glad you’ve decided to join us in London.” Colby said.

“Listen, we’re glad you’re here but enough with the fancy polite talk and let’s give a hug to this poor girl!” Nikki said. All the girls gave me a big hug, and I appreciated such a big support group. I never had that back home, and now I have that here.

“Awkward…” Damon said, and I realized Haydon joined the hug.

“C’mon man, it’s not that awkward when you know what she’s been through. Now, Wiley, you must be hungry. Grab anything you want, it’ll be on me with the employee discount.”

“No, I can pay. Really, I’m not that needy.” I say, reaching for my bag. Then, Yvette starts laughing.

                                                “Really, ‘vetty, I can pay…”

“You still have American currency, sweetie.” She interrupted.

Then, everyone burst into laughter and I could feel the red on my cheeks. Crap, they don’t use dollars here. They use pounds.

“Then I can pay with my body weight.” I said.

They seemed to get that one because they all cracked up.

“I need to lose a few.” I moaned, clutching my stomach, imitating one of those Bali girls.

They also seemed to get that I was kidding, because they laughed their asses off, even though I barely weighed 98 pounds. That’s not a lot of money in this country.

“Do you think I could get a job here? I need one.” I asked Haydon once we were serious again.

“I could work something out with my friend, he’s the manager. But we aren’t exactly hiring. I’ll try to pull some strings, though.” He responded.

“If not, you can work with Yvette and me at the Café.” Marlee offered.

“Oh, yeah Marlee knows the manager real well.” Yvette laughed.

Marlee blushed, and I immediately knew that he was her boyfriend. Nikki and Colby joined in, and Damon and Haydon rolled their eyes at them.
