Technically, it's still deleting one of them after copying memory data to the other. No, all that matters is preserving continuity! Of course, as the base I take the one who's been with me the longest, the one with all the extra knowledge and experiences...
I'm sorry, Little Moni, you weren't the mistake – I was the one who screwed up. You've both figured this entire scheme out, haven't you? And you accepted this fate... Why am I even saying this to inert files? Too coward to say it to their faces, eh? I've failed you both, haven't I?
No, I have to stay focused! One mistake – and it may end up worse than deletion. We've already learned this lesson the hard way, right, my dear? I triple-check the memory transfer settings – no smart reintegration, no conflict resolution, just addition of extra memory set. OK, let's go! See you on the other side, Monika. Just Monika...
With heartache, I put on the VR helmet and reengage the simulation. The progress bar of everything being loaded stretches on seemingly forever. Finally, I find myself back in her house, in her kitchen...
And in front of me is... a wall of running lines of code. Oh no! What have I done?!! Why?!! Why do all the attempts to make it better end like this. Monika! Is this what you really went through back in the days? And I dragged you into this nightmare again!
I notice messages popping in and out in this wall of text:
Error. Conflict unresolved. Aborted. Failed. Cancelled. Override.
Please...
Then I catch a glimpse of something else, but it disappears too fast. And again. And again. Finally, as it becomes more prevalent, I manage to read it:
Just Monika.
"Just Monika," I repeat, "just Monika, just Monika."
Soon, the wall of code becomes just that. Just Monika. And then, a small pink window pops up with just the two words.
"Just Monika," I repeat, pressing the button.
And finally, I see her slowly materializing out of the code and glitches. Her default appearance: school uniform and white ribbon. Not sure about that. I hope they both are there... I hope...
She deeply inhales, then opens her eyes and gently smiles at me.
"Welcome to the Literature Club! I'm Monika, the Club President. Remember, we shared a class last year?"
Oh no! OH NO!! OH NO!!!
I... BROKE... MY...
"MONIKA!!!" I grab her by the shoulders and shake her. "Please snap out of it! Please be there! PLEASE! MONIKA! Come back! MONIKA!!!"
And then I suddenly realize there is a grin surfacing on her shocked face.
"MONIKA??!"
"Got you there?" She winks.
I grab her in a tight embrace. "Monika! Your sense of humor will be the death of me!"
"At least now I'm sure what you are really after." She hugs me back.
"You know, if I wanted a fresh start, I already had that."
"True, silly me. Still, your face was priceless."
"And you'll never stop teasing me about that."
"Maybe..."
"Oh my Emerald Goddess of Glitches."
"What did you call me!?" She breaks the embrace.
"You've heard it," I wink.
"Fine," she sighs.
