Camila Carter had only been in McFarland for a few months, but she was already grateful to be away from the big city. She'd moved all the way from DC, and the change in scenery had been nothing short of extreme. Her single mother had moved to get away from Camila's deadbeat father, and all the way across the country was sure to do it. She worked as an elementary school teacher, so she was usually around when Camila was home.
Today, that was not the case. Camila's mother had a special show-and-tell day with her students, so she had left early. Camila had woken to the blaring of her alarm alone, and had left for school as-per-usual. Even though the school was half-way across town, it only took her three minutes and twenty-seven seconds to get there. She would run every morning, and time herself.
Camila was on the track team at her school in DC, and the fastest runner at that. However, McFarland had no sports at her high school, and the only way she could get a decent workout or a moment to herself was when she ran. That included the three minutes and twenty-seven seconds every morning and afternoon.
It was a surprise, however, when Camila's run was interrupted by a car driving past her on the road. It was a blueish station wagon with wood panelling, and Camila knew cars like that didn't come from just anywhere. Plus, she knew almost everyone in McFarland, and none of them had a car like that.
When she arrived at the school, Camila jogged across the road to see the station wagon parked in front of the school. A grouchy looking man in a suit walked out, a bag slung over his shoulder. He must be the new PE coach.
She hoped he was a decent enough teacher. As of now, their PE classes consisted of them standing around doing nothing until the bell rang, and some kids just left early. Usually she just ran laps around the track for the hell of it, but some actual classes might be good for her.
Camila emptied her backpack into her locker as she watched the new guy walk into the office, and watched Thomas Valles come storming out of there soon after. Their gazes met, but Thomas' glare was static as he continued walking down the hall like a bat out of hell.
Long ago, Camila and Thomas had been decent friends. She was best friends with his little sister, Lola. She'd been going through a load of shitty things lately, and Thomas wasn't making it any easier. They'd had a falling out before a guy got Lola pregnant, but their friendship had dissipated almost completely since then.
After a long day of classes, it was finally time for PE. Camila was excited solely for the fact that they had a new teacher, and she was itching to see what he was like. He was boring.
"Berdejo," He continued, having taken the attendance and screwing up all their last names for a while. "Cardenas, C- Denas?"
"It's Cardenas." Jose corrected, raising his hand.
"Carter?" He asked.
"Yeah." Camila replied, holding up her hand. He glanced up, nodding.
"Diaz." The teacher continued. "Diaz. Diaz. That a popular name where you come from?" Damacio, Danny and David raised their hands as their mother pulled into the parking lot. She honked the horn and yelled out the window. The three stood, and the teacher frowned.
"We gotta go." Danny said, gesturing.
"Hold on, class isn't dismissed." He protested.
"We gotta go, really. It's our mom." Danny repeated.
"Tell your mother she can wait." The teacher said with a deep frown.
"You tell her." Damacio replied with a grin. The three brothers ran over to the truck and hopped in the back.
