Here's my first attempt at a book on wattpad. I've had this story in my head for a few years now. The whole thing came to me in a daydream while jammin to some rage against the machine. Please be kind first time anyone besides family has read any of my work.
Chapter 1: People of the Sun Arun (a-rune)
Nobody knows the year. They know of the ancient civilization they've evolved from. The people of the sun scholars believed it was several thousands of years that they have evolved to what they are now. Their dark skin is as thick as leather and can absorb and reflect the harsh sun. Many humans died from sun poisoning their sun causing burns and diseases infecting their bodies. People of the sun have a dark reflecting shield allowing their eyes to adjust to the brightness the day brings. They are much larger and stronger than the humans that lived before them. Fighting day monsters evolved snakes, birds and lizards. It seems that animals were able to come full circle. Dinosaurs roamed the earth and as it changed they became extinct or evolved into birds and other animals. Now those same animals have become extinct or evolved to day monsters or night beasts. Day monsters are huge dinosaur sized lizards. They have thick scales protecting their massive bodies. Some attack people of the sun cities to feast on them others to feast on their crops. Their meat unfortunately is foul possibly poisoned from the sun.
Being able to be out in the daylight give people of the sun advantage of growing food. Unfortunately the only edible meat comes out at night. The night beasts have evolved from mainly bears and wolves. They are much larger than the animals they have evolved from. And have thick warm fur coats to protect them from the harsh cold nights. The people of the sun have access to the vegetation but their eyes cannot adjust to the black fog of the night. Therefore it is very difficult to hunt a night beast. They'll occasionally catch one in a trap protecting their land.
The only known people of the sun to kill a night beast would be a journier. That is what Arun aspires to be. His city has only been keeping track of the years for 402 years. They don't know how many People of the sun cities exist. People of the sun cities are made of earth and clay. A large cement like fortress surrounds the farms and homes. Complex irrigation systems collect the water that falls at night and distributes it to the homes and farming lands. Their homes are small apartments that circle the center fires that burn and blaze all night.
The few other cities they do know of come from journiers information. Journiers have a dangerous but honorable job. They have slowly been opening lines of communication between the cities. Not only do they have to endure traveling the hot day while hoping food and water will be available. They must survive the artic temperatures and black fog of night. They could come across a night beast and if they are lucky enough to survive the blind fight will have fur and food. But there's also the chance they could come across a moonwalker and most could not survive a moonwalker at night. Moonwalkers are demons of the night. Some believe they could have evolved from humans like the people of the sun have, but from what Arun's father has told him it's hard to believe it. They burn to a crisp in the sun like a demon. Moonwalkers can see in the night, they have glowing white eyes. They have iridescent pale skin, they're quick silent killers. Thieves attacking quickly at night stealing people of the sun's hard earned crops. If you were close enough to see the glow of a moonwalkers eye's you are already dead.
Arun's father had faced several moonwalkers though. He was a warrior and was training Arun to be one also. Being a warrior was a respectable job, they are the protectors of our city. They defend the city from the moowalkers night attacks, always on guard, they protect the farmers during the day from day monsters. Slaying all who try and enter their city. Being a warrior didn't have the same appeal as being a journier for Arun. Going on adventures and traveling seemed so much more thrilling. He dreamed of exploring outside the city walls. Discovering more ancient cities of a race long forgotten and finding other people of the sun cities. To come across a night beast and to taste smoked meat that was slain by his own sword. Arun had a plan he would continue to train to be a warrior as his father wanted. Learn every bit about fighting he can, but he'll do his own training as well. He'll start rising before the sun and start slowly learning to survive the freezing mornings outside of the safety of his city walls.
