Chapter 1

Please note that I am not in the law field so I do not know what happens or how things work in the field lol. Please don't come at me.

I walked into work dressed in my usual all-black attire which consisted of a black pencil skirt, white blouse and black blazer with my black platform heels. I didn't dress like your usual 21-year-olds would dress. I was professional than casual. I worked at one of the most powerful law firms in Washington. Richards & Co. Law Firm was up with the rest of the powerful companies. Before getting into my office, I stopped by the bathroom and looked over myself. I decided to loosen my tight bun and allow my straight raven black hair to fall down on my back. I reapplied some makeup and exited the bathroom. I made my way to my office and set my bags down and booted up my computer. After signing in, I checked all my emails. most of them from clients requesting meetings with my boss. As his assistant, it was my duty to schedule all his meetings, take messages and adhere to all his requests. After checking all the emails, I head to my bosses office to inform him of upcoming meetings. I lifted my fist and knocked on the door, waiting for permission to enter. "Come in" Mr Richards' voice boomed. Mr Richards was a middle-aged man. His big green eyes look up at me and stare as I walk in, his eyes linger on my body longer than it should. "Mrs Harvey called and confirmed her appointment for today at 14:30. Don't forget we have a meeting in 10 minutes. Here are the folders on Mrs Harvey's statement and her issue." I say as I hand him a folder. Our fingers brush against each other but I think nothing of it. "Thank you, Rio. I'll see you in the board room soon," he says and flashes me a toothy smile. With that, I nod and turn on my heel and exit his office. I walk back to my office and stop in my tracks as I see a blonde woman sitting on the couch with her back towards me. "Hello?" I say. She turns and looks at me with a smile and my heart stops. "What is she doing here?" I question myself. Christina, my cousin, stands up and walks towards me. "How you doing cuz?" she asks. I'm still in shock that she's here. I haven't seen her since I was 15. What does she want from me? "I'm good" I reply. She lets me go and I step back still wondering why my cousin is in my office and how she even got in or knew where I work. "Can I help you with something ?" I ask her. "No, I just thought I should pay my cousin a visit since I am here. Apparently, we going to the same meeting soon," she says. The meeting we have is with another law firm we hoping to collaborate with. I guess she's from the other firm. I nod and sit behind my desk with my elbows on my desk. We sit in silence while we wait for our meeting. My reminder for the meeting goes off and Christina and I get up. I walk towards the door and open it for her as I follow after. Together we make our way to the boardroom and see all our colleagues and potential business partners. Mr Richards enters the room and everything falls quiet. He takes a seat at the head of the table and we all take out our folders. I'm seated on his right side, as his assistant, I am required to be at all his meetings. We are just about to start when the door flies open and two men walk in.  One is young, tall and thin. His black hair falls just above his thick eyebrows. He's wearing a blue business suit which accentuates his pale skin. The other is much older than him. His honey brown eyes scan around the room before landing on me. I stare back intently and see a smirk start to form. His black hair is gelled back in the most formal way. I rake my eyes over every aspect of his body. The way his cheek bones protrude when he licks his lips. His light beard gives him a younger look in some way. Although he looks like a gentleman, I can't help but feel that he has a bad boy side to him. They both make their way to their rightful places and sat down. Mr Richards started off the meeting while I sat next to him taking notes. Every time I would glance up, the older man, who I have come to know as Mr Adams., would be looking at me. I look over to check on Christina but find her watching the younger guy who is named Seth. I learnt that he is Mr Adams assistant. Christina was his second assistant, as a fill in if Seth is ill or had an off day. During the meeting, I brought up various points about our company and how we would benefit them. I saw people writing nots and nodding their head as I spoke. "What would merging our business do to the law field?" Mr Adams asks. I clear my throat and speak up. "For starters, you company will receive more clients. From there, we, as a merged company, rise higher up the chain. In the law field, it's all about who is the better company. The higher we are, the better clients we get. the celebrities, the rich, the list goes on sir" I say confidently. Mr Adams tilts his head and looks at me with a smirk. "You got a smart one here Mr Richards." he says while looking at me. Mr Richards chuckles and says "I do, Don't I" and stares down at me and winks. "Deal" he says. My eyes go wide. We just merged our companies. Mr Richards gets up and walks over to Mr Adams who mirrors his actions. They shake hands and turn to everyone else. "Welcome to the company everyone." Mr Richards says. We all smile and rise from our seats. "Rio, please schedule a celebration for Friday night. Send an agenda to Mr Adams and he'll take it from there." Mr Richards tells me. "Yes sir" I simply reply. I make my way to my office and step inside. Christina knocks on the door and enters. "Looks like we'll be working together cuz. I cant wait to start." she says enthusiastically. "Me too". The words come out blandly. Christina leaves my office after saying goodbye which I internally thank God for. As I sit and start writing up the agenda for Friday nights celebration, someone knocks at me door. "Come in" I say without looking up. "You didn't get my email from me. You can't email me if you don't know it, now can you Rio" a loud voice echoes through my small office. I look up and see Mr Adams staring at me. "Oh, I-I'm sorry Mr Adams I thou-" I say before he cuts me off. "I'm joking Rio. I was just looking for a way to see you again. But here are my contact details. We can maybe go for coffee sometime...and please, call me Carter." he says with a wink. I blush at his words. "I'll consider your offer for the coffee" I say. His expression drops. "Very well Miss Williams. I'll be seeing you soon" he says and leaves my office. I don't do dates or relationships. My life is mainly focused on my work, not socialising. I finish up my work and pack up. I leave my office and head straight to the elevators. It bings and the door opens. I step in and press the button for the ground floor. The elevator stops at the 9th floor and Carter steps in. My breathing becomes rapid and my heart beats out of my chest. Why is my body reacting like this. I don't like him in that way. I can see him in my peripheral, scanning my body up and down. We ride the entire way down until the doors open up and I step out. I quickly make my way to my car and unlock it, sliding in and buckling myself up. I look up and see Carter watching me as i turn on the car. I have the urge to clench my thighs together. I start driving towards my house, trapped in my thoughts. How can he have this affect on me when I just met him?..
