chapter four.
RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHTYIREN TOOK A LONG DEEP BREATH with trembling eyes— her hand still remaining in number 067's. The doll turned around, wearing an orange dress with pigtails. Yiren's breath had become stuck in her throat. "You will be playing Red Light, Green Light." a voice said. "You are allowed to move forward when "it" shouts out, 'Green Light', stop when "it" shouts, 'Red Light'. If your movement is detected afterward, you will be eliminated."
Red Light, Green Light? Like the password? Yiren and number 067 exchanged glances and a little nod. It should be easy.
"With that, let the game begin." she faintly heard. Everyone was behaving as if it were an Olympic competition. Yiren even overheard two men wagering on who would be the first to cross the finish line.
"Green Light.", the doll said, almost like singing, in a childlike tone. Yiren didn't even have time to process what was going on since as remained precisely where she was, despite the fact that number 067 was a few steps ahead of her. Oh wow, what happened to teamwork?
"Red Light."
Nonetheless, when the doll turned around, the girl froze. Yiren closed her eyes, afraid to look at the doll's wandering eyes. Creepy. One of the men who was betting lost his balance and was caught by the doll.
"Player 324. Eliminated."
There was a shot fired. Yiren slowly opened her eyes, but remained completely still. Number 324 was on the ground. Are they taking this game that seriously? There's no way this was a real shooting, right?
"Green Light," the doll said once more as she turned around. Yiren moved ahead until she was next to number 067, as she disliked being seen as vulnerable. The other guy who had placed the bet took a step forward until he reached the blonde one who fell while the rest held back and took slow steps cautiously. Blood spurted from the blonde's mouth. In shock and panic, the other who went to check on him staggered back. He was also caught. With a final look at the doll, he turned back and ran. Another bang.
It was at this moment that all hell broke free.
Yiren had many fears, she won't deny it. Sure, she acted like she did not give a single fuck about anything yet Yiren had fears, but none of them matched up to the trepidation of death knocking at her door. Her birth mother getting taken to that place above by doves was enough for her. Yiren did not want death ever again, never. All her conversations with death have been indirect: the day she was nearly hit by a car, the day she nearly died of starvation, the day she lost too much blood from tearing holes in her skin, and now this.
All she heard was a scream, a bang, a scream, a bang, another scream, another bang, more screams, more bangs— until she heard number 067 voice. She couldn't pay attention to whatever the girl was saying to her. This is just nightmare, you'll wake up from it, it's okay, it's okay, it's okay. Yiren eyes were tightly shut trying to calm herself down. There's no way this is happening right— Her line of thinking had come to a screeching halt.
"Listen, do not move okay? Stay put." the girl was calmed by number 067, who spoke in a soothing tone. Some people tried desperately to get out of the playground by pounding on the gates, but they died as a result. Crimson blood everywhere, in despair, Yiren started praying.
"I will now repeat the rules. You are allowed to move forward when "it" shouts out, 'Green Light', stop when "it" shouts 'Red Light'. If you movement is detected afterward, you will be eliminated." Eliminated by fucking dying? Yiren wanted to scream, god she wanted to scream so bad. Who in their right mind made up this stupid game?
"Green Light."
Except for an elderly man, no one moved. How is he still alive? Shouldn't he had died from a heart attack with all of this? He didn't appear afraid at all, instead moving forward in huge steps with a wide smile on his wrinkled face. Weird.
"Red Light."
No one was moving an inch.
"Green Light."
Number 067 gripped Yiren's wrist, and the two of them took a few steps together before stopping, her still holding Yiren's hand. Butterflies again. Others, not wanting to be left behind, took a few steps as well.
"Red Light."
No one was shot.
"Green Light."
"Red Light."
"Green Light."
"Red Light."
Yiren and number 067 were now behind the man who they were fighting in the room full of beds. Still behind him after the doll said 'Green Light', Yiren was well aware that number 067 wanted revenge. Yiren was good at it, which was fortunate for her. "Who is that? I hear you." he asked. "The bitch who crossed you." replied number 067 in a low voice. "You little shitheads." he murmured. "Is that all you got, oldie?" Yiren said letting out a chuckle. "Want me to cross you one last time?" number 067 responded. Yiren knew what she meant by that. Slowly, she grabbed the man's hair in her fist ( wincing in her mind that her hand came into contact with his greasy hair ).
"Let go off me." he said, his voice trembling. "Please." Number 067 smirked, "Quite trembling, you jerk. He'll kill you if you get caught." Hot. Hot. Hot.
"Green Light."
Yiren yanked the man backwards with all her might, causing him to fall to the ground with a thud and putting her and number 067 in front of him. They ran, stopped, and then ran again. Yiren thought it was an infinite game.
Everything was going well, a little too well. Oh here we go! Guess who ended up tripping just about a few meters before the red line. Yes, Yiren, Of course.
She looked at the timer. 30 seconds left. She will make it. She will.
She was now a few steps away from number 067.
"Green Light."
Without wasting any time, number 067 returned to Yiren and helped her up, only taking three steps to the front. "Are you stupid?" Yiren gritted through her clenched teeth. "You literally risked your life helping me." Number 067 did not reply. Yiren was so enraged at her that she didn't see that number 067's arm was around her waist.
With only 20 seconds remaining, number 067 seized Yiren by the waist and dragged her to the red line. Jumping over the red line, just as the doll turned, they made it. They made it. They actually made it.
Yiren collapsed on number 067, their chests blowing from exhaustion. They were both silent, staring into each other's eyes in bewilderment. Yiren couldn't stop herself from blurting out, awkwardly sliding off her, "You definitely have a crush on me."
